Senna's Merc Cosworth was a black 190E 2.3 Saloon C502 BEX, one of 2 supplied to Lotus for their F1 team use. However his connection with these started in 1984 when he was still a fairly unknown novice driver and was drafted in to make up the numbers for a Merc publicity race for the reopening of the Nurburgring with 20 identical 190E 2.3-16s driven by past and current champions, including Alain Prost, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg, and Jody Scheckter. Guess what - Senna won, and [ insert cliche ] a legend was born. Merc retained his and Lauda's cars for their heritage fleet.
