Only one Tipo 65 made (but had chassis #65002), 65 LM was its only race, Jo Siffert/Jochen Neerpasch retired after spin damage. Car still exists - 2006 auction listing with lotsa history. The last Maserati factory-built racer. Seems it was built in a big rush (6 weeks) after the intended Maserati France entry - a Tipo 151 coupe (one of 3 made) crashed at the 65 test weekend in April, killing its driver, Lloyd "Lucky" Casner. Some of its bits - including the 5055cc V8 engine - were salvaged and used for 65002, along with a defunct Tipo 63 chassis dating back to 1961. |
