Originally, I thought this might be an LJ-series truck, but that grille is as narrow as a White WA-20. So I figure either E-series or A-series.

You could be right about the L-series. Some of those had narrow grilles as well: www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/archer/ra_mack1.jpg.

Is the red station wagon on the right one of those famous, huge Checker wagons which were only made in little numbers? I've never seen one of those so far.

Yes, a Checker Aerobus. In 1971 I saw three at Burton Service Area on the M6!

This is a Mack L, because the L has a two piece windshield. The A has only a one piece.
