This is an early 550 Spyder. The first few cars had different body styles (including at least one closed coupe) and several had the high rear fenders. There is a picture of this same car (with the "11" and tiny racing windshield) being raced in the 1977 book "Porsche: The 4-Cylinder, 4-Cam Sports & Racing Cars" by Jerry Sloniger. The caption reads "Johnny von Neumann at Pebble Beach in 1954, in one of the first 550 Spyders seen in the U.S." By late 1955, when James Dean bought his, the body shapes had been standardized to the style everyone is familiar with today. |
