The list of repairs Gomer gives to Barney doesn't include any rust repair. I would buy a 54 Customline for $300 with all those easily repaired problems. Would this car have a flathead V-8 or a six? |

It wouldn't be a flathead V8, since 1954 was the debut year of the Y-block replacement. However, the lack of "V8" badging on the fender suggests a six cylinder car, either the 215ci or 223ci. Interesting, the latter engine actually produced virtually the same performance as the optional 239ci V8, making it the smart buy for the year. The interior shot shows the car is equipped with a Fordomatic automatic transmission, which AFAIK was available on all engines. Then again, the interior shots were studio shot using components (hence the horn button gag), so the running/driving car may not have been an automatic. |

I remember Andy warned Barney to not buy it for $300 because it was "Nearly 10 years old" and that $100 would be a fair price. I know that with inflation it would be more than $1000 now but it's crazy to think that a car not even a decade old was considered junk at one time.
