I'm not sure this is a Humber Sceptre; I don't think the grille looks right. More likely a Hillman Hunter? |

Like the London - Sydney winner... but that one had number 75. |

Didn't they (Hunters) got this grill when were renamed to Chrysler. The question is, when they were renamed? Here it is in the mid-70's. |

True they did. A very late Hunter built in Ireland using the grille from the Humber Sceptre. The black head-light surround shows its the Chrysler version the Humber was bright alloy (both models had the four round headlights). Dates from about 1978 I believe. -- Last edit: 2009-07-11 21:11:46 |

Thanks for the answer. So I believe it is indeed a Sceptre. By what is visible, the grill actually can be also of it: /vehicle_84198-Humber-Sceptre-1970.html |

...except that the Chrysler badge is visible over the inner-right hand headlight (as seen in the picture). /vehicle_108019-Chrysler-Hunter-1978.html The Humber badge was on the opposite side. /vehicle_118038-Humber-Sceptre-1968.html Its a Chrysler Hunter. -- Last edit: 2009-07-12 18:43:23 |

This is much more likely to be a March 1972 onwards Hillman Hunter GLS, which used the Sceptre grille with the Holbay-tuned engine from the Rapier H120. Was successfully raced in British Group 1 championships and some parallel rallying attempts are probable. |

Update - 1973 Avon Tour of Britain works entered Hillman Hunter GLS, probably the Bernard Unett-Brian Coyle car which finished 9th. Unett's works Hunter GLS won the Castrol Group 1 production car championship that year. A superb home movie clip of 1973 Tour of Britain at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1KuoitNwD0 . Includes a racing Datsun 1200 and Peugeot 304S, spinning Simca Rally 1s, bouncing Moskvitches, and a rallycrossing Rover 3500S. Also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z1zwJgLQxc&feature=related - less spectacular but nice period music and brief glimpses of a wallowing Citroen SM in the same event. Another at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwOfaCYjHZM&NR=1 has a racing Manta, some BMW 3.0Si footage, and James Hunt in the winning Camaro spinning and doing a 3-point turn in the middle of the race track. -- Last edit: 2010-09-23 16:20:10 |
