The vehicle at the front of the picture is a Rolls-Royce 40/50 h.p. Armoured Car. First built in 1914, upgraded in 1920 and 1924. This one is either a 1914 or 1920 Mk.I version. Available Rolls-Royce 'Silver Ghost' chassis were requisitioned to be converted with a T.G. Hetherington designed armoured superstructure. Therefore most chassis are older than 1914. I don't think that any of these vehicles were actually used in Shanghai. Probably it was simply available to the filming crew and looked good. Quite a few are still in working condition. |

I think the picture was for the car. Should we give the tank its own page? -- Last edit: 2006-03-19 19:52:17 |

That thank is quite interesting, so I would suggest to use this page for the tank (since there is Alex's comment), and create another page for the car if it is identified |

update as of 16/4/11...the "tank" is a replica Rolls Royce armoured car made specifically for the film ,at the time of the update date the vehicle is in storage in Holywood,Belfast,in the ownership of a guy who has owned it for 15 years. Filmed in Malaysia, the replica vehicle is currently road registered as D 659 NTM prior to being handed back for storage the vehicle had been on display for many years in the Somme Heritage Museum on the outskirts of Belfast as a display piece for the past 7 years..the museum has now passed it back to its owner who is/was selling it in the english magazine "Classic Military Vehicle", issue 120, May 2011, page 63, described as being a replica fitted with a bedford 6 cylinder engine and gearbox...the numberplate as described above could be that of the Bedford CF van used as a donor vehicle????..the vehicle has appeared in many movies, including the Michael Collins one. |
