Junkman ◊ 2006-03-22 21:10	Still, the Pagode had two seperate 'nerf' bumpers, whereas the car in the movie has an uninteerupted bumper with overriders. the entire architecture of the car doesn't look Mercedes to me.

Sunbar ◊ 2006-03-23 12:29	124 Spider looks close I think. I have taken another captured image corrected it to 1.85 x 1.0 aspect ratio and cropped it closer. From what I can get from the image compared to pictures on the web, the size and overall shape are similar. The fabric hood (spider top) is of the same design with the same shape rear window. Chrome bumpers were available in the USA (as well as the much larger black 'federal' type later). But I'm still searching for better pictures to compare this with. -- Last edit: 2006-03-23 12:30:48
Saturn Simon ◊ 2006-03-23 19:07	I think it could be the 1967-71 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. This was similar to the Duetto, but had a blunt sawn-off tail.

wrenchhead ◊ 2006-03-23 21:10	The US federal regulations that affected import cars (impact bumpers, standard bumper height) was not implemented prior to 1973/1974. Cars imported to the US prior to 1974 had regular bumpers. I don't know about regulations in other countries.

ben68 ◊ 2006-03-24 10:28	The more I look at the the pic, the more I think it's an early Fiat 124 Spider... (lights, the way the rear wings are cut and built, etc.) I have to agree Ben 68, Fiat (124) Spider was my first thought seeing the car. Even the badge to the top-left of the rear licence plate is just visible, I think, on the car in the movie. Regarding the Alfa Romeo Spider, Wrenchhead and TheDriver.... Up to 1969 the boat-tailed spider was only available and its not this car in the movie. In 1970 Alfa did not import cars in the US because of tightening emissions standards, this was the year the Kamm-tailed cars were introduced. The movie was released in 1971 so the first Kamm-tailed cars would have only been available in the US in that year. Unlikely, but just possible these could appear in the movie. These cars however had integrated heavier looking bumpers (three times the depth of the earlier bumper or those of the Fiat 124). These extended beyond the full width of the car and would have been easily visible in the movie. In 1973-74 the 5-mph bumpers introduced. I'm 95% sure this is not an Alfa Spider even though they were very popular and appeared in a lot of movies.
