Mercedes-Benz "Pagode" 230/250/280 SL [W113]? -- Last edit: 2006-03-24 16:29:13 |

Is this it?.... Rear lights, no fuel filler and (possibly) divided bumper are different I think. It look more Italian to me. I could be wrong but I can't convince myself its a Mercedes! |

Doesn't look Mercedes to me either. Unless the ratio is off, its also too narrow and high for a mercedes SL -- Last edit: 2006-03-22 19:26:18 |

You're possibly right. I'm now hesitating. I don't think it could be a Fiat 124 Spider... Other pic available, zoomed in? |
◊ 2006-03-22 19:32 |
Well... I keep on my position by guessing it's a Mercedes SL as the pic could have been stretched... I put the pic back to "unknown" anyway... |
◊ 2006-03-22 20:44 |
You could be right about the pics being streched. I looked at some of the others and the ratio looks a little off. |

Still, the Pagode had two seperate 'nerf' bumpers, whereas the car in the movie has an uninteerupted bumper with overriders. the entire architecture of the car doesn't look Mercedes to me. |

I agree, it just doesn't look mercedes even if you fix the picture ratio. -- Last edit: 2006-03-22 21:40:58 |

Sunbar, do you possibly have a better pic than this one? |
◊ 2006-03-22 21:52 |
an Italian car? (e.g. Alfa) |
◊ 2006-03-22 21:56 |
I don't think it could be a Duetto... |
◊ 2006-03-22 22:04 |
I did not see that Sunbar already suggested that it could be italian |
◊ 2006-03-22 23:43 |
This is the only view you get and the closest. |
◊ 2006-03-22 23:47 |
Agreed...but it looks very familiar to me, Not an Alfa ...... I think |

Possibly an early 124 Spider, indeed... Where does the scene take place? I guess in the US. -- Last edit: 2006-03-23 11:13:03 |

Imdb says it is shot in New York City, NY. |

124 Spider looks close I think. I have taken another captured image corrected it to 1.85 x 1.0 aspect ratio and cropped it closer. From what I can get from the image compared to pictures on the web, the size and overall shape are similar. The fabric hood (spider top) is of the same design with the same shape rear window. Chrome bumpers were available in the USA (as well as the much larger black 'federal' type later). But I'm still searching for better pictures to compare this with. -- Last edit: 2006-03-23 12:30:48 |

I think it could be the 1967-71 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. This was similar to the Duetto, but had a blunt sawn-off tail. |
◊ 2006-03-23 19:30 |
The series 2 and series 3 kamm-tailed spiders all had black (federal regulation) bumpers I believe, plus high level stop-lamp in tail spoiler on series 3. series 3 /vehicle_15947-Alfa-Romeo-Spider-20-1985.html series 2 /vehicle_10755-Alfa-Romeo-Spider-1971.html Although it had chrome bumpers, the earlier series 1 "Duetto", boat-tail had wrap-around rear lamps - not that one definitely. -- Last edit: 2006-03-23 19:33:14 |

The US federal regulations that affected import cars (impact bumpers, standard bumper height) was not implemented prior to 1973/1974. Cars imported to the US prior to 1974 had regular bumpers. I don't know about regulations in other countries. |

It must be an Alfa Romeo Spider, but what year...? |
◊ 2006-03-24 10:28 |
The more I look at the the pic, the more I think it's an early Fiat 124 Spider... (lights, the way the rear wings are cut and built, etc.) I have to agree Ben 68, Fiat (124) Spider was my first thought seeing the car. Even the badge to the top-left of the rear licence plate is just visible, I think, on the car in the movie. Regarding the Alfa Romeo Spider, Wrenchhead and TheDriver.... Up to 1969 the boat-tailed spider was only available and its not this car in the movie. In 1970 Alfa did not import cars in the US because of tightening emissions standards, this was the year the Kamm-tailed cars were introduced. The movie was released in 1971 so the first Kamm-tailed cars would have only been available in the US in that year. Unlikely, but just possible these could appear in the movie. These cars however had integrated heavier looking bumpers (three times the depth of the earlier bumper or those of the Fiat 124). These extended beyond the full width of the car and would have been easily visible in the movie. In 1973-74 the 5-mph bumpers introduced. I'm 95% sure this is not an Alfa Spider even though they were very popular and appeared in a lot of movies. In this case I think it was a Fiat 124 Spider. 1966-1969: Duettos and other "boat-tails" - Series 1 1970-1974: The first Kamm tails, - Series 2 1975-1981: US Market Kamm tails - Series 2a Source: http://spiderfaq.home.att.net/dev_his.htm Development and history specifically for US cars. -- Last edit: 2006-03-24 13:09:27 |

It looks too small and too narrow to be a Fiat 124 Spider to my eyes... I now think it could be a Fiat 850 Spider! |
◊ 2006-03-24 19:08 |
I think the picture ratio is a little off and makes the car look more narrow than it actually is. At least, its beginning to look like we all agree that its a Fiat. -- Last edit: 2006-03-24 19:09:40 |

How about the smaller fiat 850 spider.? |
◊ 2006-03-26 01:51 |
Well I can't do better than: fiat 124 spider, so I'll drop this one. |
◊ 2006-03-26 10:01 |
Fiat 124 Spider, 75% sure. I'll drop this one too. |
◊ 2006-03-26 13:04 |
Let's call it 124 then |
