Chas Tenenbaum's (Ben Stiller) car, driven by chauffeur. Appears briefly in 5 scenes. This looks like an iL (long wheelbase version). Notice the fictional licence plate. -- Last edit: 2008-09-09 18:43:50 |

Maybe it could be a 750iL, no? -- Last edit: 2008-09-09 18:35:34 |

The wheels equipped on this car were typical on US 740s (both i and iL) 750s came with upgraded wheel & tire packages. As well as boasting the bigger engine. Here is a 2001 model 740 with the same wheels -- Last edit: 2008-09-09 18:44:59 |

OK Neptune, I'll take your word for it. There used to be a member called Adrian who would identify all the American market BMWs, but I always found it strange that you tell the engine size by it's wheels. Surely on a car like this when you order it you could choose from a range of factory alloys? That's the only reason I sometimes question identifying a BMW by it's alloys. It's like once Adrian looked at a British police BMW and reckoned the alloys denoted it as a 540i, but I said that you often see the same alloys on a 520i. -- Last edit: 2008-09-09 18:55:23 |

Well, unlike some, I do not guess but rather use what US-spec BMW knowledge I have. I try to stay away from European-spec BMWs for they are more diverse and it’s hard to tell the engine size due to trim. Here in the US though, in the past, BMW did change some trim and/or wheels according to what engines the cars (3, 5 and 7ers) had. Fast-forward to present day, and its getting harder to tell engine size for BMW is offering more engine sizes and options for the US market. |

Perhaps you shouldn't forget the possibility, that you can choose the alloys by ordering a car. Usually, especially at high-priced cars, you can order different extras than shown in the dealer's brochure. |

That does get taken into account; however these wheels (with the many thin spokes) were rarely/not offered on 750 (even when ordering) unless they were swapped by the owner at a later time. This is unlikely since the car is a brand new 2001 model. If it were older then I would question the wheels authenticity. But if it causes a hassle, back to 7-Series it goes. |

No it's OK, we can keep this as a 740iL |

Annother topic: BMW is very active in giving new cars to film-productions for free, as product placement. So the chance is big, that these cars aren't identical like the BMW's in the dealership. For example "James Bond" or the "Cobra 11"-productions. Mostly they are giving 0-series-cars, so cars, which wouldn't be sold regulary, especially the brand-new BMW's, which were destroyed in the movies. At all productions with these cars, which aren't for sale, there are BMW-employees, who are controlling, that the cars, the destroyed wrecks or parts of them, weren't sold later "under the hand". -- Last edit: 2008-09-09 19:48:54 |
