Seems the prisoner Mokes were a batch prepared for filming by Wood & Pickett in 1966 with more vertical windscreen to reduce reflections from filming lights etc - which makes them look taller/bigger screens, but probably an effect of the new angle, not actually bigger - plus slight covers over the rear arches and the stripey bits and shinier trim. Unclear how many were done, 2 known survivors - one remained on display at Portmeirion until sold to US fan where it now lives after restoration, another was 2011 barnfind in Holland with 1965 plate HLT 709C (as somename's link ^, pics there show rear arch part cover but apparently normal windscreen angle). The others were returned to normal Moke spec and sold on. |

Further info from a feature on the now restored HLT 709C (Classic & Sportscar, March 2018 issue). It was built as an Austin on 15 May 1965 and registered in London a month later. Wood & Pickett customised it in late 65 as a demonstrator for an intended series of Moke upgrades to compete against things like the Fiat 500 Jolly; upgrades were cosmetic - fake wood panels on top of body side sections and in dashboard cubbies, red and black rubber floor mats, striped seats/spare wheel cover/roof canopy, and Moto-Lita steering wheel. HLT 709C also got a 998cc Cooper engine at some point, and had several publicity appearances. On one of these it was spotted by a crew member from Everyman (The Prisoner production team) and then used in early eps. Three lookalikes which stayed 848cc were created to give a fleet of four, with all 4 now having differently striped roof canopies from the initial W&P design, and presumably the more upright bigger windscreen arrived at this point for filming. There is another restored survivor - CFC 916C - in US, but the other two have disappeared. |
