It's a 3000 Mk III (BJ8), but it's a Phase 2 car and later than a '64. Steve Byers BJ8 Registry |

Hi Steve, Regarding the year the phase 2 was introduced when you say later than 1964, the information I have found here is slightly confusing therefore.... http://www.sportscarmarket.com/Profiles/2003/September/English/ "Phase II cars began in May 1964 with chassis number 26705 and continued through the end of production in March 1968." Can you give us any better details? |

Sunbar - Very sorry for the extremely long delay in responding to your question. Obviously, this isn't a site that I check every day! The information given at your Sports Car Market reference is not exactly correct. The Mark III began production in October 1963. However, in the USA we are accustomed to a "new model year" that begins in September/October of the previous calendar year. Thus, cars arriving in dealer's showrooms from late summer through the end of 1963 would have been considered 1964 models as far as the dealers and USA registration authorities were concerned. Most of the rest of the world considers the "year" of a car the actual calendar year in which it is manufactured. The first 1,390 cars (manufactured from October 1963 through April 1964) had a chassis and other external features (turn signal/parking/stop lights, door handles) like the Mark II models. Beginning with chassis number 26705 in May 1964, the chassis was reprofiled at the rear to give greater ground clearance plus other minor improvements. These later cars came to be called Phase 2 Mark IIIs, while the earlier cars were now considered Phase 1. By the way, the car with the lowest Mark III chassis number (25315) was not the first car built. 25315 was built 20 - 23 Jan 64, while 25316, 25317, 25321, and 25324 were all built in October - December 1963. I say the car in the photo is later than a 1964 because it has the separate parking/turn signal lights under the headlamps rather than the single lights serving for both parking and turn signal. The exact start of the dual lights is not recorded, but generally cars for destinations other than Germany and Sweden with a body number higher than 76137(March - April 1965) all had the separate lights.
