Model origin should be Japan, as these were re-badged Mazda 121's.

The correct model origin is Korea since it's based on the Kia Pride:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kia_Pride

(the others on the site are listed as origin Korea made for Usa ;) )

But it was designed by Mazda, which also built it as the 121.

The Wikipedia article contains much more info than few years ago... indeed it seems that originally it was made by Mazda (but sold as Ford only in a first time in Japan) rather than Kia.
So should we change all the Festiva & Pride to Japan origin?

maybe origin: Japan, built in :Korea for: USA ? I know I have seen 'Made by Kia' on the decal inside the door of Festivas here

@tonkaTRACKER: I had the same confusion from previous discussion at /vehicle_12747-Ford-Festiva-1990.html

But so you were right, in the end :D

Only those for Japanese market were made by Mazda in Japan, according to Wikipedia article. Those for North-America were made in Korea by Kia, indeed.

@ingo yes in the past I had to for my job (I performed the State Safety Inspections for Virginia and North Carolina)

Aha, so you were some of the gentlemen, who had made, that innocent people have to wreck their beloved family-members. :/

As I've heard once from a TÜV-inspector, who had stuck his screwdriver into the rust-holes of my first K 70 (I knew before, that it will fail the test, but I needed the certificate for the police, because I got a ticket for overdrwing the time): "Aaah, I cannot remember, how many K 70 I've send to the shredder due exactly these rusted chassis-points." :(

Inspections are not quite that big of a deal here, mostly I just had to check stuff like headlamps and windscreen wipers etc. to make sure that the equipment on the car works. As for your K70, you would not have to get it inspected here as cars over 30 years old do not have to be inspected
