Looks like one of the early models, before they were sold officially in Europe. |

Probably refitted with non-sealed beam headlights... |

I don't know when they were first sold in Europe but you're right, this a North American model from 1988-90. |

Since what year they were built in Austria for the European market? |

According to wikipedia from 1994-98. |

Watching the episode online, it is in fact a Cherokee Pioneer. Does the wide license plate recess make it Euro-spec? |

I think that it can be made in Austria for European market. We have one with, probably, the same trim: /vehicle_854019-Jeep-Cherokee-XJ-1994.html |

But the one made in Austria was the Grand Cherokee, not the Cherokee... or? |

The XJ Cherokee was never built in Austria. Why has it got chrome mirrors though? That was never an option on the Pioneer as far as I can tell, or maybe it was? I know how Jeep likes to offer an option for a single year and delete it the next. I can confirm that chrome mirrors were not available on the Pioneer for '88, since I don't have the '89 or '90 option lists that's the limits of my knowledge. |
