Actually this must be a British assembled Rambler Ambassador! There was a small factory that built these cars in Britain. I collected several brochures to prove it. RHD too! |

Rambler Ambasssador does sound right but I know of no production in the UK. Could they have been Australian built RHD cars made by Australian Motor Industries (AMI)from CKD kits? If they were built in the UK in what city was the manufacturing plant? The brochures are definately Britisch not Australian. These cars were assembled in a plant near London. "chiswick flyover" It is according to this literature the same facility that built the Nash Metropolitan in the 1950's. Parts were flown in as CKD no doubt. Is there anyone out there that knows more? |

The only information I can find indicates all AMC cars sold in the UK up until the end in 1977 were imported from various other countries including the USA, Canada, and also from their Belgian assembly plant in LHD form. Some complete cars were converted to right hand drive in the UK. I would say that any Chiswick, London operation was either the main importer or the operation carrying out the RHD conversions (or both). Except that all cars were imported into the UK, any other information is less certain and needs to be confirmed. They were predominantly sold under the Rambler name although a few models in the last years were also sold as AMC. |

The literature I own clearly says "built in the UK" The RHD dashboard was also handcrafted by a couchbuilder. It also has a small caption of the other AMC models available only in LHD form. Apparently only the Ambassador and the Matador and earlier Rebels were built with RHD straight from the factory. |

I can't imagine UK assembly from CKD - demand and numbers sold were so small. But I do remember AMC were a lot more serious at trying to sell US cars in UK than other US makers - as you say there were UK specific brochures and the RHD was offered as standard, not an optional conversion at extra cost. I thought the RHD was ex-factory production, but could be wrong, and I can't explain the "built in UK" references. The 1950s Nash Metropolitan was built by Austin at Longbridge in Birmingham, so that statement is incorrect. |
