Made for J (due to fender mounted mirrors)? |

Yes. |

Those mirrors could be bought from any parts shop when they were current or recent production up until the 1980s. I have similar mirrors fitted to my Bentley, which I bought to replace some trapezoidal Desmo mirrors which were anachronistic. The door mirrors are still in place, and to suggest that the car was specially made for Japan on such thin evidence is a flight of fancy. -- Last edit: 2019-05-27 09:16:27 |

No response. Sometimes I get the feeling that I needn’t be bothered. |

Japanese regs in 60s/70s/80s insisted on wing mirrors on stalks and weren't interested in any other format, so door mirrors did not count. Example 1, Example 2. No doubt other folk can give more detailed info. |

But why could it not be a British built British or American market car, fitted with Halford’s wing mirrors, and personally exported, and, if it’s made for Japan, why is the chauffeur getting in on the left? -- Last edit: 2019-05-31 20:03:28 |

British cars that were officially sold in Japan were not necessarily in RHD, quite a lot of them were sold with a LHD setup, because driving an LHD car is considered 'prestige' there, regardless of the car's origin.. |

One T2 is recorded in the Bentley Drivers Club membership list for 1985, in the 1987 list there is nothing recorded, and in the 1989 list the same gentleman as in ‘85 is listed as owning a T1. He also appears to have been still a member in 2012 and 2015, with more modern Bentleys. I did not bother with the intervening years, and don’t at present want to climb up into the loft to hunt for older lists, which I have back to 1965. I wonder if this is that car, Chassis # SBH39802? |
