Did anyone notice that when Hammond drove through the cabin, the majority of the front end came off? As seen above -- Last edit: 2008-12-06 00:10:44 |

Which law enforcement/military organisations have actually used this? Or is this just a one-off custom built vehicle? I've done a google search but I can't find anything that doesn't just refer to its appearance on Top Gear. EDIT: Just did another search and have found out that 8 of these vehicles were built by Locomotors based in Andover, Hampshire: Link to "www.telegraph.co.uk" -- Last edit: 2011-06-23 22:50:19 |

I was responsible for its ownership from 1999 thru approx 2005, including the BBC Top Gear fun and games. In spite of extremely clear instruction that the Beeb should drive it thru the Portakabin at 3 mph using the barricade remover in 4 wheel drive mode, as you can see he went thru at about 30mph. The barricade remover caught on the bottom of the Portakabin, and the 16 tons on the hoof rode over the barricade remover, which in itself weighed in at nearly 500kg! Not happy! To answer the other questions, this was the demo model built by Locomotors, EVERYTHING worked lol! The other 8 went to Qatar and I saw them in a video of one of their annual parades about 3 years ago. They were originally assembled in 1987 to 1990 (approx). Locomotors went bust I understand. The specification on this beast was and probably still is vastly superior to RCVs on sale today ... you would not want to be on the wrong side of this. Where is it now? In a mess... saw it stripped of all the nice bits and trying to be sold on eBay in 2007. It is based on a Bedford TM chassis. |

All I have just found this blog about the Talon riot vehicle. I feel that I need to set the facts straight about this vehicle. 1. These vehicles were built by Maze developments in Gosport Hampshire between 1987 & 1989. 2. My father designed the prototype with another guy (remain anonymous) and the prototype was used in the Top Gear episode driving through the portacabin 3. They couldn’t be used in the uk due to having grenade launchers and a water canon with screw capabilities 4. I went on all the trials which were carried out on Salisbury plain 5. They were sold to Qatar 6. 20 units were made in total - 10 including the prototype under Maze developments and the rest were built under control by an American company (Cray defence) who closed the production 7. The chassis and body were built in Gosport then shipped to Lloyd’s instruments Fareham to be fitted out and the sent out on trials 8. My father purchased the LHD Bedford AWD chassis cab assemblies brand spanking new from the ministry and I then stripped them down 9. The tires and fuel tank were filled with Explososafe foam cell 10. The units were capable of withstanding CS gas attacks 11. They could carry 14 man plus driver and co-driver 12. The side panels were made of 6mm thk bullet proof steel 13. The roof and floor panels were made of 3mm thk blast panels 14. The glass was 38mm - 42mm thk bullet proof units 15. Each vehicle had white spirit screen wash In case paint was thrown over it. The vehicles were the best in the world at the time but couldn’t be sold to the UK market due to having grenade and CS gas launching capabilities. I used to have over 300. Plus photos but my ex-wife took great pleasure in not letting me have them I can answer any question that anyone has about these amazing riot vehicles Glenn |
