G-MANN ◊ 2006-06-15 15:00	"Bessie", which first appeared during the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) story "Doctor Who and the Silurians" (Ep. 7.05 - 7.11). It appeared in 9 more stories during Pertwee's tenure as the Doctor, and he later drove it in the 20th anniversary special "The Five Doctors" (during the Fifth Doctor/Peter Davison era). It also driven by the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) in his debut story "Robot" and by the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) in "Battlefield". After the series was cancelled, Bessie made one last appearance in the 1993 Comic Relief special "Dimensions in Time" /vehicle_168438-Siva-Edwardian.html Here is a site about this car with lots of information including which stories it appears in and how it was modified each time: http://freespace.virgin.net/dr.dean/ Bessie appears in Episode 1, 2 and 4 of "Terror of the Autons" (Ep. 8.01 - 8.04): From Episode 1, 5 and 6 of "The Green Death" (Ep. 10.21 - 10.26) Notice that the car now has a longer bonnet to accomodate a more powerful engine: In Part 2 of "Planet of the Spiders" (Ep. 11.22), the Doctor's new car (also known as the "Whomobile") is stolen by Lupton, so the Brigadier and Sergeant Benton go after him in Bessie, while the Doctor himself follows from above in a gyrocopter. This epic (by Doctor Who standards anyway) chase goes on for 11 minutes and in 3 stages, over land, air and water (with a motorboat and a hovercraft): After the Third Doctor regenerates into the Fourth Doctor, Bessie makes her final regular appearance in "Robot", featuring in Parts 2-4 (Ep. 12-02 - 12.04). In the climax of the story Harry Sullivan gets behind the wheel and the Doctor destroys the giant Robot by throwing the metal-destroying formula on it as they do a driveby: After 8 years Bessie returns in "The Five Doctors" (Ep. 20.23). The Third Doctor is having a drive when he gets whisked away to the dead zone. After rescuing Sarah Jane (pulling her back up a slope using a rope attached to the front of the car), he encounters the Master (Anthony Ainley), then the car is damaged by a laser bolt that strikes just in front of it. The Seventh Doctor uses it to drive to and from the battlefield, and Ace (Sophie Aldred) and the girls go for a ride in it at the end. Doctor: Have you got a helicopter available? Brigadier: Oh, better than that, Doctor. Doctor: Ah-ha! Bessie! Brigadier: Well, I knew how fond of it you were, so when you last went on your travels I had it put in mothballs. Dr.who's car is a Siva Edwardian (made in the UK) ..the company also made a small 'Mini-moke style' car called the LLama, a sports car called the Spyder (..matchbox made a model of this.!) & a few other ..more unusual cars.! Shalom ◊ 2007-01-08 21:29	The Siva Edwardian was a kit-car, built on the chassis and engine of a donor car. The one used by the BBC Props department to build "Bessie" was a 1951 Ford Popular, allegedly borrowed from the BBC's motor pool... The car wore the phony license plate "WHO-1" (and in later years WHO-7) in close-up shots and on private property, but when operating on public roads had to use the '51 Ford's original registration MTR-5. The car when completed turned out to have a top speed of 15 MPH, due to the added weight of the special bodywork, so any shots of the car driving at speed during the first few seasons were done by undercranking the camera. This wasn't fast enough for Jon Pertwee, so he had a larger engine fitted, sometime before May of 1973, necessitating the lengthening of the hood by several inches. edit: Apparently my source was wrong about the year, Ford UK didn't start making the Popular until 1953. second edit 6/4/2012: I just looked up MTR-5 on the DVLA. It's shown as a 1954 Ford, yellow in color, with 1172cc engine. Date of first registration was 5 May 1954, and the date of liability (i.e. when the tax disc expired) was 1 May 1997. Apparently she hasn't been licensed since then; maybe the car in current use is a replica. -- Last edit: 2012-06-05 01:08:44
Sandie ◊ 2012-08-23 02:35	A few sources refer to Edwardian as a Series with Tourer, Parisienne, Raceabout, Roadster and San Remo as the models. This car is a Tourer, one of the very first made in 1969. Approx. 80 Siva Edwardian Tourers were made up to 1976. Other variants were less common. 25 Roadsters were made and the others were in single figures. As a note of interest the Llama (a kind of all-terrain utility car) was made with Hillman Imp mechanicals. 50 of those were made from 1974-76. -- Last edit: 2012-08-23 02:39:56

Sandie ◊ 2012-08-23 03:15	Oddly, in my bog book of kit cars (my source in this matter) just above the entry for Siva cars (separated only by a car named Simod 595) is an entry for a kit car called the Silurian. What are the odds on that? Named for a Welsh tribe from around 70 AD apparently.

G-MANN ◊ 2012-10-11 14:20	I didn't bother posting that DVLA data before because I thought it might be a bit misleading. This kit car was built in 1969, I wonder if 1954 is the year of the Ford Popular that it took the engine and chassis from.
dsl ◊ 2012-10-11 15:24	Yes - 1954 seems to be the base car date (and confirmed separately for when the MTR series was issued). It's a minor detail but there's a comment further back on this page that it was a 1951 base car which I thought was worth resolving as the Popular was only Oct 52 onwards (and its predecessor Anglia E494A was 933cc; 1172cc was a Prefect engine in 51). And if anyone ever claims to still have the original, we can point out that it seems to have been scrapped in 97 to test their claim.
G-MANN ◊ 2012-10-11 18:50	The engine was changed at one point, hence why the bonnet gets longer. But Bessie wasn't scrapped in 1997, date of liability is just when the last tax disc expired, according to the website I've linked to at the top of the page, the car was displayed at a motor museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire in 2010: http://freespace.virgin.net/dr.dean/who1/otherappearances.htm It would be a bit heartless to scrap a car like this from such a famous TV program.
Shalom ◊ 2013-03-05 18:55	The 1951 comment was mine; I corrected it in an edit to the post somewhat later. I had originally gotten that datum from one of the various "making of" specials filmed by the New Jersey Network to broadcast during their "beg-a-thons" (membership drives) to try and keep your attention; apparently either the source was wrong, or I mis-remembered when I made the post. I definitely remember seeing a shot of Bessie driving somewhere around the State of New Jersey (they'd brought it over here for some reason) and the BBC guy driving it commented "you can't tangle with big American lorries..." as he made an evasive maneuver. Not so easy driving RHD vehicles on this side of the water.
