Could it be a EMW as well? |

Theoretically yes, but I'm not sure they were exported. Besides, there a some small differences visible (bumper, turning signals). -- Last edit: 2011-05-20 11:43:36 |

About 2/3 of the total production of EMW 327 was exported, to Scandinavia and Belgium. But those had a thicker, one-piece front bumper and rectangular indicator lights under the headlamps. So this is a pre-war BMW (introduced November 1937) |

I really didn't know they exported the majority of them. At least my guess about the differences was right... |

@cl82: where should be a use for such a luxoury car in the Sowjetzone? Way too burgeois... Who should be allowed to have one? Not the (officially ascetic and in reality uneducated low-class) Nomenklatura. Not the common people (even in the West the working class had no money for suh cars) - and the rich or even wealthy classes didn't exist any more there. All were still escaped to the West. A historical fact, which results are still today, 60 years later, more than obvious. So the only usage of these premium cars was getting real money from the NSW. |

Thanks a bunch for the history lesson about these well-known facts! I knew they exported as much goods as possible to get foreign currency from the beginning on. But since they only built 400 or so EMW 327, I thought most of them were indeed used by SED-officials as they were the people who had the easiest access to cars; besides, they were, as you said, only officially ascetic and normally had no twinges of remorse driving around in luxury cars. |

Model origin: DDR, not Germany. |

I'd say: model origin - Germany, built in - East Germany. That's fair. |

That's bit customized but genuine, early BMW 327 with exterior fuel cap on left and deep engine cover with side louvers (the opening handles are visible). |
