^ I think so - https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/images/4/4c/Im20110702SH-Mar-%3Dc512a.jpg , http://www.steam-up.co.uk/marshall/marshall_bd5609.htm (says 1914)

Registration BD 5609
✓ Taxed Tax due: 01 August 2018
MOT Exempt
Vehicle make: MARSHALL
Date of first registration: January 1922
Year of manufacture: 1922
Cylinder capacity (cc): 748 cc
Fuel type: STEAM
Export marker: No
Vehicle status: Tax not due
Vehicle colour: MAROON

BD xxxx plate series was Northampton, Dec 1903 to September(?) 1923 so 5609 seems more likely to be the Grace's date of 1914 than DVLA of 1922.

Although they are similar traction engine types they are not the same engine I believe.

Boiler side access plate missing from the movie engine's boiler. The flywheels are different; flat spokes and dished spokes. Also the cylinder valve gear is different with a higher flattened dome seen, so not BD 5609.

As it was built 16 years before first UK number plates, I thought I'd check the plate
BW 5249
✗ Untaxed Tax due: 01 June 2009
MOT Exempt
Vehicle make: MARSHALL
Date of first registration: January 1948
Year of manufacture: 1948
Cylinder capacity (cc): 0 cc
CO₂Emissions: Not available
Fuel type: STEAM
Export marker: No
Vehicle status: Not taxed
Vehicle colour: MAROON

So it apparently had its first 61 years without a registration. However book says (Oxford) BW 1234 series was only Dec 1903 to April (or thereabouts) 1926.

It is more probable that the taxation class of the engine was changed in 1948 to take advantage of changes in the legislation at that time. More to the point, if it was built in 1887 how did it escape registration on 1/01/1904 and not receive a single or double digit index no? Unless it got pinched for somebody’s Royce or something.
