 I'm not sure what to say. Everything of what's visible except for the plate is pointing towards a 1988-89 model. Maybe a 1986 with some self-cobbled facelifts?

 I guess it has been repaired after a rear-end crash with some newer parts. Agree some newer GL features (from Glass's descriptions) such as tailgate central VW logo (Aug 87+ in UK) and lower side strips (Jan 87+), but does not look tints (Jan 87+) and rear bumper looks grey neutral, not body colour.
