This brand new 1984-86 W126 500 SEL was used in some minor scenes, by the bad guys - parking, and normal driving. Nothing special, some good shots, but only of the exterior. It looks really beautiful - one of the coolest W126s on the site. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It survives the movie. It can be seen parked when the henchmen are running for the van at the end if you look hard enough. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -- Last edit: 2012-11-06 01:13:38 (karoomay) |

6PHF248 was a prop plate in 1984. Now it's a real plate according to www.bar.ca.gov. No smog test results for the current plate. |

I feel like the 500SEL was for the 1985 model year only in the US... |

The commander of the Northern part of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Demilitarized_Zone has one still in daily use. |

According to Carfax, 6PHF248 now belongs to 2006 Honda Accord SE. |

It was offered for 1984 and 1985, as a result of the grey market boom that nearly killed Mercedes-Benz of North America's business (customers were flocking in droves to Europe to import 500SEL/500SEC/500SE/500SL models rather than the anemic 380 models that were available stateside). -- Last edit: 2024-06-05 23:47:19 |

![]() ![]() I actually just discovered that this car was a grey market (European-spec) import, which would make it a 1980–85 500SEL, not a 1984–85 US-spec 500SEL. The clues that gave it away were as follows: - In the scene at the traffic light, if you look very closely, you can see a hole and grommet underneath the driver's side headlight. This is from a headlight wiper arm which was removed. On US-spec first-generation W126 models, this option was never available since the headlight lenses were not flush. The car seen here was federalized upon importation and received US-spec bumpers, headlights, turn signals, and taillights. - Even though the license plates on the car were props, the plate frames were from a real business in Santa Monica, CA at the time. Beverly West Auto was not an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership, but rather a private importer and federalization house that would bring cars in from Europe and convert them to meet DOT/EPA requirements. Here's another car, a grey market 1982 Ferrari 512BB, which is currently for sale and has Beverly West Auto mentioned in its listing's description: "In 1984, Young had the car transported to Beverly West Auto of Santa Monica, California for where it was Federalized including impact certification and odometer conversion from kilometers to miles." (Link to "www.cavallinorossostlouis.com") - Importing cars via the grey market had become wildly popular by 1984, and the biggest market for them was Southern California. Buying, importing, and federalizing one was a much more cost-effective option than buying a US-spec model from an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership. It only makes sense that a big studio like Paramount Pictures would want to save money and buy/rent the cheaper option. – This car had tinted windows and an antenna sticking out of the trunk lid. Typically, buyers who opted for the US-spec models were more conservative with their styling choices and kept everything 100% stock. Not that the producers intended this, but it only makes sense that Victor Maitland would "smuggle" a car from overseas rather than go through the completely lawful route. ![]() Higher-resolution images here: https://imgur.com/a/4cFTVYK -- Last edit: 2024-06-06 07:46:47 |

@Shervinator you forgot one other possibility, this car could be a 1980-84 euro 280SEL that was rebadged as a 500SEL. Maybe that's why no interior pics are shown. Maybe it has a manual transmission. My friend bought a grey market 280SEL back in the late 80's and rebadged as a 500SEL as soon as he bought it. |

it can't be a 1985 because this movie was from 1984 |

Did that instantly make it go faster?? Maybe I should stick a 911 GTR3 badge on my Kia Ceed estate?? |
