PYE gives 88-89 F prefix series or mid 96 N prefix, both London issued. |

Am I missing something bigger about it? Otherwise it's an Austin FX4. |

Basically an FX4, but a later model by LTI or Carbodies who bought the rights from Austin and continued into the 90s. |

It was added as unknown since I didn't know if it was Austin, Carbodies or LTI. (only oldest ones are Austin) |

Wheels match the new style of many of our LTI Fairway entries - Feb 89 to late 97. Therefore both F and N plates with PYE are possible, so have dated as 89. However none of our Fairways are dated (3 pages) and seem to include older wheels (FX4S??) examples. Probably some sorting needed?? (and/or confirmation that wheels are diagnostic for separating). |

I believe wheels are significant for dating LTI. However aren't they only push-on trims that can be replaced on existing steel wheels, when they lost or damaged or original Austin style chrome hubcaps are lost etc? Taxis must be regularly 'improved' when repaired I guess. |

Then I was. Thank you. |

I think Sunbar is right that wheels are significant. IIRC the original Austin FX4s had plain pressed steel wheels; but what I can't remember for sure is when these horrible plastic wheel trims came in (possibly with LTI?). They cover heavier stamped steel wheels similar to those fitted to 30 or 35cwt vans such as Transits, CFs and the like, but obviously not doubled on the rear axle. (I know this because the surviving LTIs in the provinces have usually lost the trims.) |

It looks from our collections (allowing for some mis-IDs) as if 85+ LTI FX4S had same wheels and hubcaps as Austin FX4. Then came late 87 FX4S Plus which look as if simpler and maybe smaller chrome hubcaps - more painted wheel seems visible. Then 89+ Fairway with this dogbowl wheel cover. |

Plastic trims were fitted when the Fairway Driver was introduced in 1992 so if they are original for this cab then the N plate will be the right one. |
