Hm. Although hood/fenders seems to be post-'73,in interior shot we can see pre-'73 dash. ? |
◊ 2006-02-02 02:01 |
Sure, but since this is in Oz, it is a RHD conversion. Down under they might have retained the old dashboard design. |
◊ 2006-02-02 09:50 |
Or used another vehicle for interior shots. |
◊ 2006-02-06 21:43 |
On exterior close-ups old style dash also clearly visible. Although I know, that they use stunt double truck, which was totalled in end of chase. |
◊ 2006-03-09 08:34 |
BTW, "Coolpower" is just a designation of engine/turbo setup, not model or trim level. |
◊ 2006-05-03 22:01 |
i thought this pulled a tank trailer. |
◊ 2006-05-03 22:17 |
Yes, they use it to pull a tanker, but on the scene pictured above Max starts the abandonned truck that he found on the road to bring it back to the refinery to connect the trailer to it. I plan to rewatch the movie soon to add few pictures, and add some missing vehicles |
◊ 2006-05-29 16:07 |
Oh okay. The only part I've seen in this movie on tv is the truck scene. very good chase scene. |
◊ 2006-09-20 22:37 |
Why didn't they use "Coolpower" in the U.S.? Actually, it's a fitting name, because Mack trucks are cool & powerful. |
◊ 2006-10-03 08:56 |
I suspect, that Coolpower name came from larger number of intercoolers and more power, than on Econodyne setup. Econodyne name still in use, but Coolpower replaced by Maxitorque or something similar,I just don't remember |
◊ 2007-01-03 06:16 |
the cool power was a engine level like the maxidyne, ecnodyne etc... There were a few trucks used for filming. |
◊ 2007-01-11 11:09 |
they only had the one truck when filming the movie because when they come to the rollover they only had one shot at it |
◊ 2007-02-21 00:02 |
Twin stacks and air cleaners makes it a V8, which would make it an R 700 |
◊ 2007-03-31 10:18 |
R700 base engine was inline six. with 11 sixes and 6 V8 optional. And alot of modern truck came with dual stacks and air cleaners, although they equipped with 6 |
◊ 2007-07-21 21:07 |
What kind of trailer is connected to it in the ist place ? |
◊ 2007-07-22 00:01 |
First the one on the picture, kind of flatbed with grilles. Later a tanker trailer. |
◊ 2008-07-11 15:55 |
OK, just to set the record straight a bit here, a "coolpower" was called that because it was the first to use an air to air intercooler, rather than an air to water aftercooler, or as in most early Macks, no charge air cooling at all. Secondly, Twin stacks and Twin air filters means diddly squat as to what's hiding under the bonnet. The coolpower and maxidyne engines had an air filter just for the intercooler air flow so the intercooler stayed clean, as this was a "box" type mounted on top of the engine, cooled by a little turbine driven by bleed air from the main pressurized engine charge air, which drew air through the left hand air filter and blew it through the intercooler. And most trucks in Australia had twin stacks on the exhaust until later years when 6 inch plus diameter exhaust tube became common. Plus it looks cooler. |

Junkman, This R-600 was made in Australia as a RHD truck, not imported in and converted! Joe |
◊ 2008-12-20 13:56 |
Nightrider, Maxitorque is Mack's gearbox line-up and doesn't have anything to do with engines! Coolpower is an engine range, as is the CCRS, Econodyne, Thermodyne and Maxidyne! Joe -- Last edit: 2008-12-20 13:57:18 |

this is a 1979 mack R600 because it only has two head lights on the front, from 1982 onwards they had 4 head lights and cause the truck cab is early 1970's cause up till about 1979 they used the old style roof clearance lamps. and it a quad box gearbox which was only used from i think 1975 ish to 1980 so yeah. |
◊ 2009-09-23 16:58 |
Thanks! My fault,as I never was big truck specialist. Just an amateur. Ok, do you have any ideas, what actual engine and tranny it could have? When I say "actual" I mean "make and model"...lol |
◊ 2009-09-25 18:16 |
Information arrived. Only Mack engines were available in the R600 series. They were inline 6 turbocharged engines that ranged from 237hp to 350hp. They were around 673-676 cubic inches displacement. So possible names for it are R685 R686 R612 List may be incomplete... |
◊ 2009-10-27 01:06 |
the transmision is at most a 10 speed due to the fact that it has 2 shift levers AKA a Twin Stick MACK, also if you listen closely to the film you will hear that the truck has an air powered starter wich is a very rare item to see in trucks due to unreliability of start up on the first try -- Last edit: 2009-10-29 00:26:11 |
◊ 2009-12-28 11:32 |
It was actually a standard factory fit item to Australian Macks - unlike America where you got electric start standard and had to pay for air start, it was the other way around for us! We had air start standard with electric start optional! Joe |
◊ 2009-12-28 11:34 |
Nightrider, It has a CoolPower 320 tip-turbine turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine with air start, a single stick gearbox (don't quote me on model - I believe it could be the triple countershaft MaxiTorque 12 speed), Mack 38,000lb diffs and a camelback suspension! A bloody terrific and powerful truck in it's day! Joe -- Last edit: 2010-03-09 08:31:21 |
◊ 2010-03-09 08:35 |
This Mack is actually a R686ST - more information on the Coolpower engine here: A Coolpower has an aftercooler mounted to the side of the cylinder head, and uses a tip turbine fan to boost and ram air over this aftercooler. It uses 2 air cleaners (COE) or one (conventional/bonnetted) and sometimes had vertical bar shutters to open and shut in front of the radiator to maintain proper temperature. It had to have 2 air filters (COE models) or two lines from the single air filter (bonnetted/conventional) to feed the aftercooler fresh clean air! |

There were a few R600s built which were fitted with 6V92T Detroits (model designation R626), but they were rare. |
◊ 2010-10-21 13:03 |
the truck actually had a 350hp mack motor with a quad-box set up , thats why they had a differant guy drive the truck in certain scences as mel gibson couldnt learn how to shift a quadbox in the time they had. that info is straight from the truckin life article |

I understand that two trucks were used but I'm not sure if one was purely for interior shots / close ups and the other for stunt work. I know they had different air cleaner arrangements and slightly different interiors. |

I've always wondered why this truck has the word 'EARTH' spray painted down the drivers door. |
◊ 2013-01-17 10:32 |
Because its trailer had the words "THE VERMINS ARE INHABITED THE" spray painted down the tent. |

You can see these other vehicles and people are standing, not moving due to its dangerous stunt. You can see the rear roll bar believing that the trailer could smash the cab. Fortunately, it never happened. -- Last edit: 2013-06-12 16:02:21 |

Any of you wonder or know what exactly happened to the truck before Max found it? It's likely the dead man he found wrote that phrase on his truck, but I wonder if he ran out of gas during the chase, ran out before they found him, or they took the gas after finding it. Also, the truck appeared to be hauling junk aimlessly through a wasteland. |
◊ 2015-05-08 01:04 |
According to the Mad Max Wikia this truck is a 1978 model http://madmax.wikia.com/wiki/Mack_R-600_Coolpower -- Last edit: 2015-05-08 01:04:38 |
◊ 2015-05-08 14:23 |
They just say the cab is between early 1970 until about 1978 (as already said in the comments above, it is from the 70s) |

In the scene where Max started up the vehicle, the truck reveals that it has a July 1981 New South Wales registration sticker on the window on the passenger side door. -- Last edit: 2015-05-22 14:11:55 |

The scene was filmed at the Mundi-Mundi Plains lookout, just outside Silverton, NSW. |

The Mack being a steel dash is pre 76 ,In 1975 the plastic dash was introduced in Australia (1973 in the USA) In 1975 there were still some steel dash cabs being sold as 75 model just the last left overs ,1976 all were plastic from then on its a coolpower the right aircleaner with it duel pipe going into the bonnet is the giveaway to it being a tip turbine setup the engine could have been any of these hp ratings 237,285,300,315,350 HP so my guess 1973 to 1975 ,its definitely 73 onwards not before, mack changed the cab at the back so there was more legroom in 1973 in one of the links nightrider put up of wrecked truck i can see the cab with a deeper back ,you can compare it with a google search of a r600 flinstone cab Edit.. heres the guy that did the stunt in the mack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1EUQegif2Y -- Last edit: 2018-05-31 14:10:38 |
