To use minor bodywork characteristics to identify chassis manufacturers is not, in my opinion, a good idea. A company might choose to have the same coach work on, say, the Bedford chassis for local or contract work, and on a heavyweight chassis like AEC or Leyland for continental touring and motorway work. Really the only certain way is by the registration number or the fleet number, but even these can cause trouble. |

we are approaching idea it is Bedford, by beeing no heavy chassis, and most numerous! here is a page dedicated to Bedford VAM showing tank filler cap with any bodywork, tmo this "minor" detail is synonymous to Bedford badge. http://www.travellerhomes.co.uk/?p=2678 last step should be (fictive) operator "Grays Coaches" but i know even in one fleet they used to have different makes. -- Last edit: 2014-06-02 13:42:21 |

The position of the fuel tank is a result of the chassis design and might be a reliable guide. I don't know if the Ford chassis could have had the fuel tank in a similar position to the Bedford, certainly they both had the engine upright at the front. We can probably eliminate the Reliance as it seems that it was unusual to find it used for a Viceroy body. |

Whilst its not conclusive, it does confirm its highly likely it is the Bedford and, unless there was an actual unforseen requirement to move the fuel tank, Duple appear to make its position chassis specific. Most likely a Bedford. |

So have we all settled on Bedford VAM Duple Viceroy?? No reason for Gray's Coaches to be fake - this was probably real footage. Probably a genuine Glasgow, Ayrshire or Lanarkshire company. |
