Seems RAF did use Fordson N - possibly derived from Industrial model with small wheels and rubber tyres - eg http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?32574-wartime-fordson-tractor-help - with quote "some RAF tractors apparently had VERY high top gears to enable them to cross airfields quickly. Given that the normal top speed was about 4mph (think how long it takes to cross an old airfield walking!), this was A Good Thing. However doing 30mph in a vehicle with no suspension and NO BRAKES anywhere other than a runway must be pretty hairy" |
