I don't know if they were used as make up for German tanks in the mind of the director, or on the basis of accurate depiction (for the Wehmracht used captured Renault for its occupation duties).

old french tanks were used by the germans in places like Paris because they were too outdated for the front but since they only had to deal with lightly armed partisans they were suited for such places

It should also be noted that the ones featured in the movie were probably US made, as they were licensed by Renault to US manufacturers from 1917 onward, for use by the US army in WW1...
