Wikipedia explains it best:

wikipedia wrote For the 1987 model year, the last model year for the conventional cab pickups, the Rounded-Line C/K-Series were renamed the R/V-Series. R-Series now designated two-wheel drive, while V-Series represented four-wheel drive.[43] The name change is also found in the vehicle identification number.[44] This was done in preparation for the next generation GMT400 trucks, which were produced concurrently with the older line. The new 1988 model trucks entered production December 8, 1986 at Pontiac East, Oshawa, and the new Fort Wayne plant. The 1987 models continued to be built at Janesville, St. Louis, and Flint.[45]

Thanks for explaining. Why I didn't guess to read this in Wikipedia myself?

All 30/3500 Series Square body GM Light trucks were standard equipped with cab marker lamps.
They built crew/bonus cab/4 door pickups in the 2500 series which did not require cab marker lamps. They could be had as an option.
Truck is a 2500 series.

Do you have proof of this? First time we are hearing about this detailed change between the 3/4 & 1 ton. I did not find any reference in the 1989 brochure: Link to "www.gmheritagecenter.com"

I will be more than happy to change if we can proof what you commented to be true. For now I will revert to R-Series until we can validate your assessment.
