Probably they don't want to mix it with Daewoo-Chevrolets. |

Why they named Daewoo cars Chevrolet? To change their image, but how GM want to do it, when now everyone know that they still ashemed of these cars (thanks to this strategy of Corvette sale). It is a bit odd - they gave a Chevrolet name to korean cars and took away from the classic* american vehicles. *Personally I've never liked Corvettes. ![]() -- Last edit: 2007-02-17 22:01:51 |

The official reason given I believe was that GM did not own the 'Daewoo' name as that remains with the Daewoo company for the manufacturing of white goods and electrical products. 'Chevrolet' outside of the Americas was to be used for the 'low cost - good value' range of cars. Hence why the Corvette would become a brand in itself. It only makes sense to GM and those that don't know the original Chevrolet range of cars. -- Last edit: 2007-02-17 16:30:26 |

In USA Chevrolet is also a somewhat "cheap" make in the GM group, no? But as in Europe they did not had that image (mostly because the only well known Chevrolet here is the Corvette, I guess), so it is a little strange to chose the Chevrolet name rather than a brand-new make. On the other hand, by using a well-known make, people are less afraid of buying these cars. I've heard that the rebadged Daewoo sold much better when they changed the name, even if at first they were still exactly the same cars. |

Chevrolet is the bottom rung in the GM ladder, although I'm sure they'd prefer the term "value" over "cheap." As for why they're selling Daewoos as Chevrolets, at least in North America, has to do with the Cavalier. The Cavalier was a very cheap car, which meant it sold well, but it also helped tarnish GM's image (imagine you buy a Cavalier as your first car because it's so cheap, and then every time you get in it, you're reminded of how cheap it was, and not in a good way - you'll probably start looking elsewhere for your next car). So, GM tried to make sure the Cobalt was a much nicer car (the interior is certainly a huge leap forward), and brought in the Daewoos so they'd still be able to compete at that price point that made the Cavalier so successful. |
