Is it a real Abrams or something else in disguise? The producers didn't receive any co-operation from the Department of Defense. |

This is actually a "visually modified" Centurion tank, one of the same ones used in the film "Courage Under Fire." How should it be listed, then? |

Funny, I just learned about this the other day- any of the Abrams featured in movies without the support of the Department of Defence probably were these "vismod" Australian Centurions- the Abrams in Jericho is the same one. Perhaps they should be 'made for movie' M1A1 Abrams. |

I've heard that just about all of them, with the exception of the ones from "War of the Worlds," are the Australian Centurions. But yes, if it doesn't have DOD support, then it's not an Abrams. |

How should it be listed then? |

I'd put "[name of manufacturer] Centurion disguised as General Dynamics M1A1 'Abrams'", but the Wikipedia entry about the Centurion doesn't give a clear explanation of who made it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centurion_tank |

If I recall, all the Centurions on this site were listed under Vickers-Armstrong. |

That's under that name that we listed the other Centurions (also some Buick but they look different ) |

For those curious, this is the company that owns, operates, and rents out the fake M1 Abrams tanks: http://www.armytrucks.com If you go to their site, you can see pictures of them (they have three of the modified Centurions in inventory, judging by the photos). You can also see that "Jarhead" is listed under their filmography. |

Thanks for the link to that site, JBan. Which films actually do have DOD support? Obviously not anything that is anti-war or satirizes the US military but that's what a lot of modern war/military films are like. They don't make films like John Wayne's The Green Berets anymore. -- Last edit: 2009-12-20 14:25:23 |

I'm not sure if you were asking a serious question or not but you basically answered it yourself. Only the movies that portray the US military in a positive light would have DOD support. Notable recent examples would include: War of the Worlds (2005) I Am Legend Both Transformers movies Iron Man |

The funny thing about those films you've listed is that none of them are remotely realistic. |
◊ 2009-12-21 02:14 |
But they make the US military look good to a large public A more realistic example would be Black Hawk Down. |

Tears of the Sun, Stealth, Pearl Harbor and seasons 4 and 7 of 24 have also received DOD support. There's a Film Liaison Office in the Pentagon that gets to review the movie scripts in return for providing the troops and equipment. An interesting documentary on the topic is available here: Link to "documentariesonline.net" |

I gathered that, but there they're only looking good in a scenario that is total fantasy Black Hawk Down was good though. I suppose Jarhead got turned down because although it was based on a true story, one of the Marines was a complete redneck idiot and someone gets killed during Basic Training. Also they might not have liked the stuff about Marines looking foward to killing people. Thanks for the link to that documentary, Badlymad. -- Last edit: 2009-12-21 11:57:30 |

Army Trucks Inc's Abrams are Chieftains, not Centurions. You can tell because: *There's a large "V" shaped splash guard (or something) on the glacis plate. The Courage Under Fire tank doesn't have this, neither does the same tank in Cradle 2 the Grave. *The fume extractor is mounted over the tank's real one, at the wrong end of the gun for an Abrams (last third rather than first third). The Courage Under Fire Centurbrams has the fume extractor where it should be on an Abrams. *The driver's hatch is underneath the turret rather than forward of it and offset to the tank's right as on a Centurion. Entries that need this fixing: Jarhead, Jericho, Hulk, Iron Man, Cloverfield, Southland Tales, The Day the Earth Stood Still, D-War, Malcolm in the Middle. |
