How do you know this is a (1962-63) 2600 L (741 made) and not the similar looking:
- 1956-60 BMW 502 V8 (2.582 made)
- 1962-63 BMW 3200 L (416 made)
- 1957-60 BMW 502 Super (1.158 made) or
- 1962-63 BMW 3200 Super (1.027 made)?

I have to ask as they to my untrained eye look much the same when looking in my BMW book.

 m yfather drove such a 2600 L that period, allways thought it is just altering of nomenklatura, but 1961 new boot lid distinguish the 2600 from 2,6 the year before and there seems the extra chrome for the L So chapeau to 130rapid once again!

Especially when net sources are weak - like here - I search perfect samples of cars from exact years and compare each other. The best are photos taken on events, added to sellers' notices, 'barn finds' with no sign of modifications, and original adverts (however carefully...). The web pages ilustrations aren't good enough because authors make mistakes. Book & advert editors also goes wrong time to time, when choosing photos to ilustrate.

We know about 'Baroque Angel' few details changing through years - rear window size, quarter window in front doors, wheel types & tail lights - circular since 1961. 3200 L/S isn't excluded here, but today we have no idea yet :) how to distinguish from 2600 L.

 Simply because BMW wasn't use 502 name after 1958 in adverts and brochures, leaving it on spare parts catalogues only. BMW 502 became 2.6/3.2 in 1958, and 2600/3200 in 1961. And I was that admin who add [502] chassis code for later 2.6/3.2 & 2600/3200 samples, to keep them together.

What I meant was just [502] instead of 2600 L [502]. That is until we know for sure.

I'm sorry for being nickpicking, but some car magazines and other sites on the net are using Imcdb as a fact rather than a suggestion. And that can lead to some strange consequences.
Some time ago I read that Volvo [240] had in total appeared in a set number of films, which happened to be the number of films that had been dealt with here.

 So, we should cancel most of '105' or '120' Skoda models as well, leaving [Typ 742] only. And many others.
It's nothing wrong to follow the major universal IMCDb rule of choosing oldest & cheapest possible version.
However... Sometimes we're following that, sometimes not (vide Mercedes W123].

 BTW, new knowledge.
It seems 502 3.2 Super / 3200 S had specific bootlid handle-deco. Much larger than cheaper versions handle with separate key locker.

 I believe at least the 3200 S can be excluded as it had a special V8 badge on the boot lid with an additional "Super" just above the V8.

According to Lintelmann, "Das BMW V8 Buch", 1989, the new models were introduced at the 1961 IAA, which I believe is used to present the following model year. Hence 1962+ MY.
At the same show BMW introduced the Neue Klasse.

BMW was almost bankrupt at the time and because of that decided to use the rear lamps from their Motorcycle range. Hence they only needed two rear lamps instead of four as of previous MY's.
Other means of saving cost was to use the same equipment to all of the models, with very few exeptions. One thing can exemplify how little money they had; when BMW decided to have a bigger rear window on the [502] they couldn't afford to modernize the sheet metal press, but had to cut out the extra with the help of a paper template.

I belive the round instruments on the facia were also introduced on the 1962 MY.
