The trailer appears to be a form of 'mobile dynomometer' (I don't know if that's the exact correct term); it has a central diff that probably transmits the resistance-drive to whatever is dissipating or storing the energy. It must be calibrated so that the car is working against the trailer unit putting excess stress on the engine cooling system?
