![]() ![]() "Clive Peacock is a postman in a small seaside town in Dorset. He's happy in his job and doesn't want it to change. When deliveries by bicycle are to be abolished, he is offered early retirement but he doesn't want to retire. On his last day, he collects the post from the pillar box and decides to deliver it by hand himself as a protest. So he starts out on a long journey by bike all around Britain, delivering each letter personally. He is hotly pursued by the police (who want to arrest him for "stealing Her Majesty's mail") and by the media." Very much BBC Sunday evening on the sofa drama, but very well done. Lots of humour, eccentric characters, good actors and acting, and a whacky logic of its own. The Dorset town is the fictional Holmouth, but a lot of that suburban footage has cars etc with London plates although most of the locals talk with strange accents which is unexpected from the mouths of some of the well-known cast. The tour of Britain goes to Gloucestershire, Leamington Spa, Skipton and Appletreewick (Yorkshire Dales), Clyde estuary and Arran, Leeds and London and uses most of these locations very well. My copy is a VHS transfer which runs straight through for 2hrs 30mins (so all timings on that basis), but I think it was a 2 or 3 episode mini-series when broadcast. Now released on BBC dvd (available since March 2016), which is stated on box as 80 minutes, but apparently actually runs as 2 episodes totalling 154 minutes. So my timings should still be reasonable match for the full length. |
