A pretend houseburglar tells about his escapades for a public service film about keeping your house secure. Filmed in Brixton, south London. Backgrounds - something white at 09-28 .... very unusual to see something bright white in a film of this period - (postwar?) sporty saloon at 09-38 .... a Jag?? Can't get a better view because unco-operative Brixtonites keep getting in the way - Lyons van at 09-41 .... possible candidate for a page if identifiable and enough Lyons interest?? - BP tanker at 09-57 ..... any chance it's a Dennis Centaur as discussed here(although an earlier year)?? If so, I'll promote it for rarity. |

1. The white car is a Ford Eight Model Y Four Door saloon, and is what we used to call a "Valspar Special". 2. Jag Mk V, just the back is all you need. 3. Did Lyons have Morris-Commercial LC type vans, because it look like that model, but not certain. 4. BP definitely had Centaur tractors, but this may be the earlier Horla. Brilliant name for a tractor unit. -- Last edit: 2015-04-27 09:18:55 |

Yes, almost certain even by these limited views and confirmed by CM Magazine Archive, well worth a listing as an interesting Joe Lyons van! Apr 1948 Morris-Commercial LC3 25-30cwt Van Earls Court Show 1948 "The 25-30-cwt. van built for J. Lyons and Co., Ltd., with Normand bodywork and shown by Morris-Commercial Cars. Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, had canted and well-guarded side and front shelves of metal, a corrugated metal floor, an inside rear step-well and a Perspex roof light." "'Horla' was the model name given by Dennis Lorries to the post-war PAX model when supplied in normal form as an articulated tractor." from http://www.mechanical-horse-club.co.uk/Other%20mechanical%20horse.htm . Also all the Horlas I can find online seem bonneted. But found a preserved non-artic Pax tanker UVD 13 (=1959 plate) - https://www.flickr.com/photos/41056391@N05/15318182638/ - so maybe this is just a Pax as well. |

According to S W Stevens-Stratton, "British Lorries 1900 - 1992" there was a 12-ton version of the Horla, fitted with the 8-litre engine used in the Centaur and the Jubilant. The Centaur started in 1948, but must have had an earlier version than the one using the Willenhall cab. |

The proportions, wheelbase and fuel tank in the second 'BP' Dennis tanker suggest to me its more likely to be a Dennis rigid (not artic). |

If so, then the earlier cab used on the Centaur rigid could be this one. |
