An interesting documentary about 50 year old American cars still being driven on a regular basis in Cuba. (as a result of a US trade embargo imposed in 1962 that is still in effect today) Features interviews with many people and the experiences they've had with their cars. Also, several interviews with some of the skillful mechanics that work tirelessly to keep these cars running. With all the heavy machinery only owned by the government, they have to make do with simple tools and whatever they have on hand. |

I notice a lot of the subtitles are asking for help. How does it suggest we can do that? I am deeply concerned with losing this piece of the world car culture. |

Lots of american cars does not have original headlight. The headlights were mostly come from Soviet Union when they replaced the burned out sealed beam headlight. |

lots of them dont retain many of their original features..in most cases they are identifiably by the shape, some dont retain original badges, grilles, engines..some are grafted on from other cars...generally these Cuban cars are in worse condition than they appear...when Castro pops his clogs and Cuba gets pulled into the 21st Century, most of these vehicles will be heading for the junk yard....untill some enterprising Cuban realises he can make a bit of cash selling them to collectors outside the country!!!, i dont think any will ever be released, as, like in the USSr, these will be classed as part of their heritage, and no doubt a ban will be imposed on allowing any to be taken outside the country...like in the USSR...Berlin Wall came down..USSR collapsed.....former USSR was invaded by military dealers looking for Nazi stuff...and collectors looking for old cars...they found them..bought them...then were stuck when the government said "they are part of our heritage" and slapped a ban on them coming out of the country!!!! same thing will eventually happen with Cuba. |
