Adding as many significant vehicles as I can.
As a documentary its a mixture of formats using parts of the Le Mans (1971) movie and recently found unused footage shot at the time, plus 'behind the scenes' action, mixed with revisiting the locations with Chad, Steve McQueen's son.

Looks like a very interesting movie.

Definitely worth watching.

Shooting a multi-million dollar movie without a script was never going to be easy. Running over-budget and late with a an associate film producer (McQueen wanting the perfect racing depiction) and the director (wanting a successful movie) fighting for control. The racing drivers probably in more danger than in an actual race due them having to repeat set-piece action shots at racing speeds. Plus McQueen's personal life issues and subsequent death are all covered.

Also 1969 - the traffic jam is behind John Woolfe's fatal crash of his brand new private 917 on first lap.

Agreed - I saw it a few months ago on BBC4 soon after I'd been investigating the stories of the camera cars - the Porsche used in the race and the hacked GT40 used after the race for the rest of the filming
[Image: dscf4679cropcomp.jpg]
(a 1967 Mirage rebuilt in 1968 as chassis P/1074 if anyone's interested) which - oddly - was not shown at all in this programme. I learned a lot from this film, but was a bit disappointed that it tried to make a possibly over-egged narrative around the personalities and their alleged issues/problems/conflicts with each other. The context as I understood it was more determined by practicalities - McQueen had (perhaps naively??) pinned his hopes on being able to build a film from the 1970 race footage, but that failed, partly because much of the race was wet and gloomy and the night filming produced nothing useable. So only the start footage really made into the film, and everything else had to be re-invented, along with now needing a definite story and a new budget. This took everything to a new level beyond McQueen's control, so commercial/corporate decisions meant a new regime to complete the project, without necessarily involving the feuds and battles the programme suggested had taken place. A few talking heads were used in the programme who usually gave strong personalised opinions, but left me at least thinking there's a more balanced and complete story still waiting to be told, instead of this fairly nuanced pot-boiler approach. I'm definitely no expert on the story and whatever shenanigans may or may not have gone on, but many potentially interesting strands did not surface.

Ooops. There was a shot of the GT40 after all. But am still surprised how it barely appeared despite being such an important part of the full story. We have a page for 1074 before it was attacked with a tin-opener.

I frequently find problems with documentaries, about subjects about which I have a serious interest. They have to make them appeal to the broader public so the degree of conflict in the documentary is perhaps not surprising.

I also watched the screening on the BBC's I>Player in April and ended up with a few screen-captures (for a completely different reason), only finding it again on Amazon recently, so the image sizes did not match. I may have to revisit some, to clean things up, but I've already spent too much time on it.

Basically the recipe for any documentary, these days. It's all about the people and their feelings, their struggles and their hidden traumas. I mean, if someone ever makes a documentary about IMCDB, there would be five minutes about the beginnings, five minutes about cars in movies, and the rest would be about the real people behind the screen, why the site matters for them or something, and a search for the elusive 93montero.

They all are. #39's red hash marks on the right fender are specific to that year.

Should have a page, it would be the first 917 LH on the site.
