1985-1986 GMC K-1500 Sierra Classic Wideside

If filmed inside California, it may have the 5.7 liter 350 cubic inch pushrod V-8.

If filmed outside of California , the biggest gasoline engine it could have would 5.0 liter 302 cubic inch V-8 with electronic spark control (ESC).

That's weird. Was there actually an engine that was only available in California?

Yes. Starting with the 1981 model year through 1986, the torque-happy 5.7 liter 16-vavle 350 pushrod V-8 was dropped from the half-ton class C/K pickups in all states except California.

The reason was that the newly updated 5.0 liter 302 V-8 with ESC did not meet California’s emissions requirements. So the bigger, more powerful 5.7 V-8 was offered in its place.

For the 1987 model year, GM made the 5.7 350 V-8 available (as an optional extra) in all half-ton pickups, in all states, with factory fuel injection. For that reason, 1987 models are highly sought-after by collectors, both because of the 350 V-8 and factory fuel injection.

Interesting facts, good to know, thanks! But isn't weather or not this truck has that engine irrelevant? A truck that was only sold in California could easily be moved to another state, couldn't it?

The engine is not particularly relevant, but I always add extra info or trivia when I identify a vehicle.

As for a California truck with the 350 V-8 being moved to another state, sure its possible (especially in surrounding states that border California) – but it would be a rare occurrence elsewhere in the U.S. For one, the 350 V-8 was only available with shift-on-the-move all-wheel drive, and only one manufacturing plant supposedly made them, the General Motors Fremont Plant in Fremont, California. So that greatly limits their production numbers.

There are only few working examples left, so they would be about as rare as a 1987 model with the 350 V-8.
