This version was simply called '5 Automatic'.

Is that info worth adding when we don't list the gearbox anymore?

Huh, what, where? That's new info to me. At least I know there are some cars that do have it in extra info, for instance Benzes of the 60s. If it was badged as such externally it can be kept IMHO.

Then the American Golf/Jetta II Diesel should have their names in extra info as well. They had the badges and called that way in the brochure.

My memory is that 5 Automatic was a distinct model in the early days, with a unique trim level similar to GTL but not quite the same - and it was never known or badged as GTL Automatic for instance. Also there was no automatic option on other trims such as TL or whatever. Another example is early Rover 2000 Automatic [P6].

I don't think this trend lasted, and both Renault and Rover switched later to offering an automatic option across normal trims so it stopped being a model and became a tick box option on the order form. Many firms - partic in 60s - fitted Automatic badges on the back of cars, but they were simply option tick boxes, so not significant; some also applied Overdrive or in a few cases 5-Speed badges in the same way, and Triumph even put IRS badges on the back of TR4As. So these types of badges by themselves don't mean much for our purposes, and Gamer's favourite Golf/Jetta Diesels can continue to slumber peacefully.

But there is a case that we can choose - if we want - to recognise 5 Automatic and 2000 Automatic as specific versions. I sneaked a 2000 Automatic into our collection a few days ago  Maybe there are other cars where this quirk can be nominated. But it's a fiddly one for us to deal with, as it dies whenever the maker decided to offer the slushbox as an option across other trim variants in the range - the "5 TL Automatic moment" for want of a better phrase. Which will not be an easy moment to pinpoint.

Up to the 80s a lot of stuff only came with 1 Automatic version with the trim level called Automatic, it wasn't simply an optional extra like it is now.

I don't see why the Golfs wouldn't have diesel in extra info?

Because it wasn't usually a trim, but in North America, it came with its own badge:

Like said by others, until the 80s, even 90s for lesser segments, the automatic was rarer, and often was offered in specific trims (and not available on other versions), often based on top of the line or near. Other than the cited cases, also Fiats for example had Selecta trims for automatic versions, usually based on S trim (or corresponding one) plus automatic gearbox, but with specific badging. It's not like let's say a modern VW with DSG or similar.

About the Golfs, I'm not sure how the American market considered it, but personally I agree with Sandie, and I think it can be highlighted as a separate version?
