The illustration on the book cover and here http://www.longstonetires.com/image/9600hp%20Borrani.jpg are obviously different to the above E-Type. LHD versus RHD and 2 wipers not 3 wipers? So is "The Greatest Ever" - Left Hand Drive - car a phoney ? |

True, '9600 HP' was a Jaguars Cars Limited prototype registered therefore before the E-type was released. However this LHD car cannot be '9600 HP' and the phoney registration was added maybe for when the footage was shot. So after 1961. |

This is the genuine 9600 HP E-type pre-productiom S1 FHC, chassis 885002 - http://www.xkedata.com/cars/detail/?car=885002 - displayed at 1961 Geneva Show about 50 years ago give or take a week or two, and road-tested to achieve the magic 150mph headline figure (though it might have had a nearly D-type spec engine). It is now owned by Philip Porter who wrote the book in Dudley's link about its history and restoration - I haven't read it, but googled up a lot of references. The history seems to be that it was built in late 1960 as LHD and the 6th of 7 prototypes (despite the # ending in 2), used for initial launch promotion in spring 61, then quickly converted by Jaguar to RHD and used as a press test car before being sold off in 62. A few owners later, it was sold for £950 in 1968, and by 1977 was bought by Philip Porter as part of a job-lot with 3 other E-types for £2750. Sat in his barn decaying gently until 1999 and then total restoration to concours condition for E-type 40th anniversary trip to 2001 Geneva show. Still in his ownership and makes occasional festival appearances. So 1960 Jaguar E-type S1 fhc Prototype. Edit: adjusted to #850002 from #885002 - there seem to be different views on the chassis numbering format, and it now matches our other early numbers. Car identity unchanged. -- Last edit: 2011-12-15 00:33:57 |
