Sunbeam Rapier convertible series 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SunbeamRapierSeries1.jpg |

Is Mark = Series for the Rapier? As we have both on the site, if it is the same we have to select one that I could assign to "mk" field. |

This is not a Sunbeam Rapier. There have been no convertible Sunbeam Rapiers of the first series but only hardtop coupes. It is a Singer Gazelle Convertible Coupe of 1957. |

In my opinion 'Mark 1' is just as acceptable as 'Series 1' when applied to the Rapier, in production between 1955 and 1958. The only time it could be confusing is when comparing the models with the Hillman Minx equivalents. For the Minx 'Phase I, II, III, etc.' were used up to 1957 and 'Series I, II, III etc' were used after and were completely different models. Looking at information about the Sunbeam Rapier, a couple of websites state it was only available as a 2-door saloon/sedan until the 1958 version was introduced with the rear fins. If this were true the convertible shown in the movie would not have been possible. The convertible was introduced as a Hillman Minx and Singer Gazelle but the chrome trim on the side would not have been the same as the Rapier in the movie. The Hillman version is as shown below, so its not a Minx, also the Gazelle did not have the downward curving chrome trim on the rear wing. The second image is a Singer Gazelle Convertible series 1, this has a different cover over the registration plate to that shown in the movie, but the side is not visible. I can only assume at the moment that the Rapier was available as a convertible possibly only for export. Edit....Pilou, I agree with you conclusion however I cannot find a Gazelle with the down-ward curving chrome trim? I agree.....Keep it as a Gazelle. -- Last edit: 2006-04-20 15:19:09 |

Concerning the downward-curving chrome-trim ,I checked all my documents and must agree with you ,early Gazelles (and also Minxes) had straight chrome trims on the rear wings , including the convertibles. On the other hand ,the Sunbeam Rapier 1955-1958 has only existed as a hardtop coupe and as far as I am aware was never advertised or sold as a convertible even for export markets even not in the US. Rapiers only became available as convertibles in 1958 with the introduction of the winged models. So we face a really interesting mystery here.It still may be possible that this one is a later one-off conversion of an early Rapier into a convertible by sawing-off the hardtop but this would have been a costly exercise. The canvas top of the car looks stock Singer or Hillman. It is a left hand drive car imported by Rootes France.Could also have been a one-off initiated by Rootes France at the period before factory convertibles became available but ? |

I have to agree - an interesting convertible! It would have been good to have seen the front but I'm certain that could not have appeared in the movie. |

DKW F11 behind the Panhard... |
◊ 2010-12-29 18:39 |
Actually a Junior; the F11 was a stripped version of the edgier F12. The DKW was already listed: /vehicle_30030-DKW-Junior-1960.html Edit: Mais quand-même, Figu, bien venu à IMCDb ! On aime bien les gens qui voient des voitures intéressantes -- Last edit: 2010-12-29 18:41:59 |
