Repeated from main page "OSJ 524 = Buteshire, now Argyll in Scotland". Have been trying to find out more about this car now it's got its own page, but difficult to get full confirmation. Anyway, some points for the Renault experts: 1] I'm fairly certain nothing called an Ondine was ever sold in UK - but we may well have had Ondine-spec cars called Dauphines. 2] "Between 1957 and 1961, Dauphines were assembled at Renault's Acton plant and one powder blue example was driven by no less a personage than HM the Queen." Link to "www.independent.co.uk" . Can't find any expert confirmation for this yet or the suggestion that UK Dauphine Gordinis were always imported, though several references to Acton assembling 750s and 4CVs. All assembly at Acton stopped at end of 1961, and the site is still Renault UK HQ. So should this be a Dauphine and made in UK? |

The extra chrome bar under the license plate was only found on the Ondine, a 'luxury' version of the Dauphine, with a 4-speed gearbox. Everywhere the Dauphine is much better known, though, and most people won't see the difference... Therefore the existance of the Ondine is unknown by many. To our surprise the opposite took place in Spain: when we travelled down there with our Dauphine, everybody called the car an Ondine... (the picture in my profile was taken in Sitges). |
