No it's a self-built Soviet car, there were literally hundreds of these made by individuals from the 50s-80s. This one doesn't match any of the 'known' cars though (I've just gone through about 300 of them...)but there were lots made in this pseudo-American style during the 60s. |

Kegare, it's not on that list, I have been through the whole thing. This shouldn't be 'custom made' as it is doubtful it was built just for the film, rather a self-built car by a private individual. It should stay in 'unidentified' as there is more chance someone will recognise it there. |

 We could lift up this rate. It should be forbidden to post new cars and movies for a while, until the IMCDB-members have done their homework. Before posting one new car, the contributor has to identify correctly ten or twenty unknown vehicles. Until we reached the 99%. Not 100%, this would look too somophoric and overbearing. So people could think, here are spooking freaks, who are tooting in their own horn, how great and smart they and their knowledges are. We should avoid such impressions in the public  |

I don't see the link between posting cars and identifying cars. The site needs both people who spend time uploading and people who spend time researching and naming. Making either task more difficult harms the site. As for our unknowns [a] they're a good opportunity for newcomers to get involved [b] many are partly known (eg make or model but not both) rather than complete blanks [c] some are impossible to pin down further (eg it's a Mini but we can't tell which one from what's visible, or it is a shared body between several possibilities) - we know what the alternatives are but can't definitely choose one [d] some are too blurry/indistinct (but still important in their film/programme) [e] some we just can not find out about until someone uncovers the necessary information (eg this one or some of the older b/w films) but if/when that happens could be important references. Why is there a worry about these unknowns? Perhaps we could highlight a handful each week for us all to revisit and reattempt to gradually remove a few? |

I started off on the site identifying a few unknowns on this page: /movie.php?id=1004509540 Though before that I didn't have an account but still browsed the site. The thing there is that probably relied on the page being at the top of the last updated section or a page I stumbled upon randomly. If you look toward the bottom of the page of unidentified cars some of them should be easy enough for people who know such classic racing cars. There is also the issue where long unvalidated programs finally get validated and unknown cars end up a few pages down on the list. I have no idea what my stats are like for uploading/identifying but I guess the former is greater than the latter (or do the uploaded cars I have identified before uploading count?) |

it isn't the "unknowns" that bother me... thay seem inevitable on a site that will be forever a work in progress, though if we all payed some free time toward identifying a few more per day it would be a good idea. for a while i was trying to do 10 old ones per day, and when life slows down a bit i'll get back to that. the ones that bother me personally, are the cars that have had the "unknown" stripped away, and hence ~ effectively become "none" models forever, when they are actually unknown... |

@dsl > for the [b] [c] [d] we usually list them with just the make, when the model cannot be known. Sometimes by mistake the make is set to a name and model is not set to known, but most of those with empty model name either do not have a model name, or cannot be identified precisely (e.g. for many Cadillac it is impossible to chose between two or three models if some details are not visible on the picture). And indeed posting & identifying is different. Sometimes I just add many cars as unknown due to lack of time, sometimes I do a little research when posting them to try to find a matching model and even the year range. And when I have nothing to post but have some free time, I take a brand or a model and do some cleaning by adding missing years and/or chassis-codes  -- Last edit: 2010-11-17 16:57:55 |

I hesitate to comment on this, being strictly an identifier; but could I suggest that posters check back on their 'Unknowns'? I've sometimes identified, or suggested an identification, for an unknown, without anyone taking any notice. I don't say it would make a huge difference to the total, but in the immortal words of Tesco every little helps. |

I like it, when it's separated. It's quite boring, when the contributors are identifying the cars completely. In this case you have just a short look into this movie-thread and can leave it directly afterwards. It's getting interesting, when unidentified cars were posted, and the IMCDB-rat race starts, when the lurking freaks are coming out of their hideouts and trying the be the first and fastest.  |
