medimanic ◊ 2009-01-22 10:29	There is a general hate for eastern Europe's cars only because of their poor construction quality. People doesn't realise where those cars are pointing their target group. There are whole families that still today keep moving with and try to keep them runing for obvious economic reasons. So those cars, sold new in surprising prices, played and still are playing an important social role. They certainly don't deserve to be blown up or get a firework decoration and they are by far more usefull than any American SUV that needs a swimming pool of gas just to move one person for some miles...to put thinks the straight way.. -- Last edit: 2009-01-22 12:43:59

Ingo ◊ 2009-01-22 16:48	@medimanic: the bad reputation of the yugo was coming from the usa, because over there hte people had always loughed about cars, which were too small for their eyes. it was similar with the renault 5 "le car" and later on with the geo metro. in europe, also in western germany, these cars werent such joke-cars as in the usa. yes, when the yugo was released, the german motor-magazines had written, that the quality was not good and that its technic is antiquated, because its from the fiat 127. but finally the result was, that its the price, that beats these deficits. in west germany the bad reputation of the yugo was based more on the thinking "the usual fiat-junk", than on the thinking "the usual eastern block-junk". -- Last edit: 2009-01-22 16:49:41
Ingo ◊ 2009-01-22 17:02	by the way: for several years, until ca.2000 or 2001, there was an abandoned, brand new yugo to see in my former home-town dortmund. it stood in the showroom of a former yugo-dealer. when the war in yugoslavia had begun, this yugo-dealer had closed. the car was left in that abandoned shop. it stood there for years and years, later it was no visible any more, because the shop-window was so dirty. when a new owner has opened a garage again, the yugo came out of the showroom - directly to the backyard besides the cars for wrecking. some day it was picked up by the scrap-dealer. anyways: i am looking around for one new old stock yugo-part. one sort of wheel-bearing is identical with the k 70.

There are many still in circulation here in Greece and in several other European countries, so would not be so hard to find one for parts. I have been talking in general about eastern Europe's cars, not only the Yugo, that put several poor families in the motoring world and this is important in my opinion. US mentality drove the world in the present economic disaster, and pollution levels to the point of no return! If they considered economic cars ridiculous yesterday I immagine they are crying today looking to what Detroit has been reduced and counting some hundred thousant people left with no job.. and several ectars full of stocked monsters unable to find buyer._ -- Last edit: 2009-06-18 12:40:47

A lot of people seem to think that a FWD compact will do just as well as a 4x4 in any conditions...and it's always fun to see them get stuck on the muddy dirt roads here after heavy rainstorms. On the contrary an American car of the 80's and 90's was made to last for a maximoum 10 year range (or seriously restored) no matter what. I remember US cars of early 90's, specially a Chrysler MPV I used to drive then.. the brilliant paintwork was gone by the first three years and the rear passenger's sliding door was opening during cruising with no request..

Yugos from 1980. - 1985 didn't have headrests in the back. You can see back headrests on this Yugo - 1986. model, and it was branded "Yugo 45A" (45 HP engine, it wasn't available in USA) or "Yugo 55A" (55 HP engine, same as Yugo GV). Yugos with letter "A" were exported to Greece, UK, France etc., until it was renamed to Koral/GVX/GVL etc. in 1988. 45/55A's were also sold in Yugoslavia as better-equipped model, but mainly they were made for export. Yugos with "A" also had light switch which had the word "lights" written on it(coz' 80-85% of "A"-Yugos were exported), while other models had small picture of a bulb. Practically none of those cars are left, apart from the ones that were squirreled away and never driven. The high number of American cars from the '80s and '90s still on the road seems to contradict that. As do the two 1980s vintage GM vehicles that I've put over 200,000 miles each on with practically no maintenance done (including my current truck, with 225,000 on it and still running like a clock). As does the world gasoline engine mileage record, held by a 1990 Chevrolet pickup (over 1,000,000 miles with no overhauls).

GM managers of that era (late 60s) today admit it clearly & loudly! Do you remember any European president or prime minister to ask the Japanese government to make an "effort" to increase import of European cars? Because American presidents did..! And if remaining European cars with no automatic transmission are hard to have a second hand future in an almost exclusively 'automatic' market why don't you try to count American cars remaining in Europe (that drives everything, automatic manual or clutchless)..
