This is the original movie car from Grease, after it was restored (and fitted with a slightly different grille) and it's now displayed at Volo Auto Museum of Volo, Illinois. and they claim it started out as 1946 Ford. The unit seen in Jay Leno's Garage at the Petersen Automotive Museum in L.A. is a Replica, more precisely the one with a rectangular grille! According to Jay Leno, 'Greased Lightning' was built by George Barris & Dick Dean and I guess that's where this rumour started, supported by the fact that said replica once was part of the Barris Motor Car Collection and Barris even trademarked and licensed it to merchandise producers. Dick Dean actually did build a 'Greased Lightning' replica, though, and that was the one from Barris sold to the Petersen Automotive Museum. But still: Contrary to popular belief 'Greased Lightning' is not an original Barris Kustom and apparently Dick Dean wasn't involved in the construction of the original one either. Eddie Paul, trading as 'E.P. Industries' of San Francisco, "located, restored and customized thirty vintage cars" seen in the movie and also was involved with the stunt department and that's where 'Greased Lightning' was created. |
