Commentary says "Austin eighteen twenty four hp touring car". Plate is Dec 1903 - Feb 1922, but sequence looks pre-WW1 and film implies about 1914. |

I would very much doubt it was known as a 'phaeton'. Quite forward styling for 1914. It looks little different to the post WW1 12. -- Last edit: 2015-05-31 09:43:31 |

Reading through the two relevant wiki pages on the Austins of this era - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_18/24 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_20_hp - it is easy to see there could be much confusion. In fact it seems that the factory was unable to make up its mind which specification to use. I think that the 'Vitesse Phaeton' was a one-off car for the Motor Show. Whether this car here is that car I don't know. I see that the post war Austin Twenty - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Twenty - was a completely different car with a monoblock engine which had the same cylinder dimensions as the later version of the car here, which had separate cylinders. |
