Buick Roadmaster Convertible Phaeton 1940 ( 71-C) |

The famous "Casablanca" Buick phaeton is a 1940 Series 80 Limited, Model 81C. The car still exists. It was used in numerous other movies, as well. I will post some color stills from one of them. The 1940 Roadmaster Convertible Phaeton had a rounded deck. It used the mid-1940 GM C-body style which was continued on 1941 Roadmasters and was not available with sidemounts and did not have running boards. A major Buick reference book published in the early '70s incorrectly substituted a picture of a model with sidemounts for the 1940 Roadmaster phaeton, so this may be why there is confusion. There is a second 1940 Buick in "Casablanca," a light-colored Century Convertible Coupe, driven by "Major Strasser." It also survives and was recently offered on Ebay...it now has sidemount spares, which were installed by a later owner. Both cars were sold into collector hands at a Warner Bros. property auction ca. 1970. |

Richard E. Osborne's "The Casablanca Companion" by (published 1997) is in agreement that this car is a 1940 Buick Limited Phaeton model 81C and that the color was/is Aztec Brown (page 263). |
