1968-70 Yorkshire TV kids series (2 series each of 13 short episodes) about a 16-year old London lad sent to stay with relatives in Yorkshire Dales when WW1 breaks out, and set early 1915 onwards, but imdb trivia says "The series was filmed in colour, even though British TV was still black-and-white at the time, in anticipation of Britain's imminent upgrade to colour television and with a view to selling the series overseas in countries such as Canada which already had colour television.". This attempt to market overseas might explain why every ep opens with a modern intro showing a 1968 Yorkshire bloke in a strange red suit explaining what's happening, and then throwing in voiceovers during the eps. It also means his 1960s Land Rover pops up in background of one of these intros. imdb only mentions one location (Hazler Lane, Appletreewick, North Yorkshire) for opening titles clip in every ep of a platoon of soldiers marching away from a village (which is actually Burnsall with its distinctive bridge in distance - they've got a couple of miles to go before reaching Appletreewick), but several other Yorkshire locations used, including lots of moors, several impressive ruins, a derelict coal mine, stone quarries and seaside cliffs, none so far definitely recognisable. S1.01 train for choo-choo fans Engine 69023, not sure which line for filming - may be part of Settle-Carlisle. Or somewhere else entirely. |

S2 - another 13 eps, but hardly any vehicles - only 2 entries to add. Another mix of adventures where Tom is incredibly brave and fearless, but a few unexpectedly deep storylines which show the trauma of WW1 underneath the cosiness of a kids tea-time series. Trains: ep 2.01 - engine 69023 again, plus Dent station on Settle-Carlisle line ep2.03 - no number visible eps2.12-13 plane for impdb - a 4 role in a storyline across episodes. and a faked crash Set in "1916" but plane looks a lot newer to me - is it a Tiger Moth??? Some witchcraft with the reg no. on tail - it's usually painted over, but seen in a few later shots (although they sometimes flip the image) - I think it's C (or E) 8740 (or 874D) |
