Finally this modern masterpiece of British cinema comes to IMCDB! Now I really like this film, so I might get a bit sixcyl-esque with background cars. These are all period cars that are there as part of the set to give to recreate the 1960s. If anyone finds I post something that's too background, I'll listen and won't mind deleting it if necessary.

Filmed in 1986, this film is set in 1969.

They overtake this tanker in the driving rain. Marwood can't see where he's going because there is no wiper on his side, so Withnail tells him what's in front of him.

In this film the period background cars are reused in different scenes. There's two motorway scenes where the cars are shuffled about and a scene in Penrith (actually filmed at Stony Stratford in Buckinghamshire).

They seem to have done a fairly good job of recreating the late 1960s with the correct period cars (although not every vehicle has been identified), especially considering this is a low budget film. However in some scenes keeping anachronisms out was unavoidable, especially when they drive down the M25 (which didn't exist in 1969) and you can see the blue road signs. Also in some shots you can see 1980s background cars, most noticeably here:

But otherwise the modern background cars aren't too obvious, you'd have to look out for them to notice them most of the time.

The motorway scenes were filmed on a section of the M25 that was under construction (it was opened the year this was filmed) and they surrounded the Jaguar with clusters of pre-1970 vehicles to attempt to recreate the period.

I don't suppose there are any chases in this film?

Actually there is a bit of an action scene, Withnail speeds the Jaguar down the motorway (although the car's probably only doing about 50-60mph at the most, the rest of the background cars are moving slowly because they filmed on the M25 under construction), weaving through traffic. Then the police go after them, so they turn off the motorway and pull over. See the page on the Austin Morris J4 Police van for more details.

(Actually, the French title is Withnail et moi—there is a mispell on IMDb.)
