Shouldn't it be listed under Lotus make? I thought that "John Player Special" was a cigarette make ![]() Edit : somebody renamed it to "JPS Lotus" while I was writing my comment ![]() -- Last edit: 2006-05-01 12:08:53 |

I made it, but started to think, if it should be just Lotus, so the search engine can find it? |

Yes, to group it with other lotus. But only if it is correct to list it as Lotus. I do not know much about such cars. What role has "JPS" name there? Is it only a sponsor, or is it also the company that built the car, the chassis or something else? |

'John Player' was the sponsor for 'Lotus Racing Limited' a division of Lotus Cars Limited, from about 1962 with 'Gold Leaf Team Lotus' in Formula One. Adverts until then had to be a maximum size (small). But by re-naming the racing team and painting the whole car in the tobacco companies colour rather than the national colours they avoided the regulations. Later the naming changed as necessary for the brands advertised, 'JPS' actually being a brand of cigarettes, made by John Player. Lotus is definitely the manufacturer, 'John Player Special' the sponsors name for advertising purposes. -- Last edit: 2006-05-01 14:57:47 |

Sunbar's post is misleading. Overt sponsorship was forbidden in European racing until January 1st 1968 (by European, I'm including countries like South Africa and Australia, which acknowledged the authority of the FIA in these matters - the situation in both North and South America was different). The association between Lotus and Players started in that year, not 1962. The requirement for national racing colours was dropped and there was no restriction on the size of adverts, but in the UK the BBC tried to bring pressure to bear on John Player so that the ads were not all that clear on TV - the famous "smoking sailor" was sometimes obliterated. The Gold Leaf brand was the title sponsor for Lotus from 1968 until 1972: it was then switched to John Player Special and the cars were officially renamed John Player Specials (though most people still called them Lotuses!) |

So this one is a Lotus or a JPS ? ![]() |

Lotus is the manufacturer. The model could I guess be described as 'JPS' or the Lotus type number or both. 'JPS' is not the manufacturer in my opinion, despite how the car was renamed. |
