Disguised Polonez?? |
◊ 2014-11-06 21:59 |
Very disguised in such case - completly. Doesn't look like it, but seems stylists of the Range Rover II saw this episode and took some inspirations. |

It definitely seems to be something modified and disguised. Really bugged back when I watched this. |

Some fibreglass kitcar estate inspired by Range Rover. ![]() |

Maybe Sandie will have ideas, but the only similar thing I can think of is GRS Tora (developed by Ginetta, used Hunter [Arrow] oily bits) eg http://en.ginetta-club.com/model/ginetta-grs-tora-26 . Seems lots of different fronts could be fitted - a few examples - and this front looks a bit Sirocco??. But used Hunter doors, which this one has not got. |

Scene here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCgt4ZVbpsQ Considering the plotline I suspect no manufacturer would have wanted an identifiable car used so I still think it is a disguised car or maybe something wrecked in another episode recycled (there's a motorway pileup a few episodes on, something from that?). It looks like it has rear doors but they've been covered over as an example of the disguise theory. -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 00:21:17 |

Early part of clip is genuine 5 door hatch with big 3rd window or maybe estate - definite rear doors inside and out, but mum loads kid into back seat through front door (so maybe already modified at that point in sequence). Then becomes more disguised - very fake front grille etc. Has E176 DMP (fake, not issued) or E176 OMP (= WHITE 1988 VOLVO 240 GL AUTO ESTATE) plate, but would be amazed if it has anything recognisably Volvo. |

^^On the next page someone also suggests Lada Riva Estate, which is another possibility. |

Are we heading into Made For Movie territory? |
◊ 2014-11-07 01:12 |
I think so. I'd be curious about what's really underneath all that though. -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 01:13:23 |

It is a clever fake as it has elements of a few vehicles , my bet is Eastern European . Cars were still relatively expensive back then and its always cheap and/or old stuff getting trashed![]() ![]() ![]() -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 09:22:01 |

It looks more like an altered Japanese car going by the design seen in the video posted. The profile reminds a lot of Datsun Sunny Estate but the door handles' position is considerably lower.![]() |
◊ 2014-11-07 12:01 |
Sunny estate idea looks very good for the window shapes |
◊ 2014-11-07 12:29 |
Japanese looks likely to me. I don't recognise the seat belt latch plate and I know most European seat belts from the 80s onwards. Lock cylinder above the external door handle also unusual but not seen on Sunny Estate and unlikely it would be modified. edit: - I have never seen the lock cylinder above a door handle (only under or to the side) and is so unlikely I think now it probably has been repositioned. Are any interior views of a Sunny Estate available to match the passenger side dash area with the clip? -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 12:42:00 |

The front indicators are from a Talbot Horizon, I'm sure about that. And the Horizon had its door lock cylinders above the handles. Does anyone know about a Horizon estate conversion ? Or a one-off show car perhaps ? -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 12:55:17 |
◊ 2014-11-07 13:04 |
The Horizon has a groove along the bodyside at the level of the door handles, which our mystery car doesn't have. |
◊ 2014-11-07 13:32 |
The Talbot Horizon's windscreen, 'A' pillar, front door glass, bonnet rear edge and panel form all appear to match. The 'groove' panel-form through the front wing and the door is relatively easily filled and blended perhaps (to conform to the rear end?). The rear-side glass frame section (double section) does not match the door glass frame (single section) and is manufactured differently - possibly from a different car on a Horizon front end? |
◊ 2014-11-07 13:38 |
Horizon had distinctive wheel arches - very difficult to remove so wings are different source. |
◊ 2014-11-07 13:47 |
The Horizon's 'groove' is just visible on the 'burnt' car's front wing I believe!![]() |
◊ 2014-11-07 13:54 |
Another strange detail : the side windows are typical of a four door estate, but there are no handles on the rear doors ! The woman doesn't even try to open the rear door ; instead, she's placing her baby through the front door. I wonder if this car was a one-off, non-running prototype for a Horizon Estate proposal, sold off by Peugeot after they closed the Chrysler UK R&D department at Whitley. -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 13:56:43 |
◊ 2014-11-07 14:05 |
It occurs to me that perhaps the script requires the car to be three-door, so that it's impossible to rescue the baby in the back even though the fire starts on the front seats. |
◊ 2014-11-07 14:38 |
A close-up of the distinctive rear-door glass frame is the same as the Horizon's shape and size. The rear doors, if they are covered up would be the same as the saloon. Although its unlikely Chrysler UK would sell a static buck of a new design proposal (they are usually scrapped) perhaps in this case it was sold or given to the production company. |
◊ 2014-11-07 14:57 |
I very much doubt if a factory Horizon prototype would be involved; also Horizon was French developed, so unlikely that Ryton/Whitley had design studies. But on a different screen, I think I might now be able to see bulge of Horizon wheel arches. Still fairly sure there is Sunny Estate cabin in early shots as she puts kid in car and then interior shots as other kid plays with matches, but it then changes as she talks on phone and then for burning as different window outlines. -- Last edit: 2014-11-07 15:54:09 |
◊ 2014-11-07 15:57 |
Aerial also matches Horizon, maybe they took an already damaged car and added some more bodywork to it? |
◊ 2014-11-07 16:18 |
If the script required the car to be a three-door, why did they use this five-door estate ? Three-door hatchbacks aren't a rare species in the UK. The production could have bought an old Mini, or a Renault 5, or a Fiat 127, or... |
◊ 2014-11-07 16:49 |
As Sandie said earlier, the producers would have wanted an unrecognisable car for legal reasons. Turning a five door hatchback into a three door estate is one way to do that. |
◊ 2014-11-07 16:54 |
Talbot Horizon modified as a 3-Door Estate, then. |

I've never seen this show, but if there's a legal thing involved, then for instance, why didn't the production team disguise this burning Vauxhall Cavalier ? /vehicle_748766-Vauxhall-Cavalier-1979.html It is, but a very time-consuming way. Especially grafting a whole roof extension. |
◊ 2014-11-10 19:39 |
In this scene, a baby is killed because a car interior is not flame retardant and catches fire too easily. In the episode with a pile-up somebody is killed quite graphically by how easily a car (not shown properly in a dark, foggy scene probably for the same reasons this one is disguised) suffers an electrical fire that consumes the entire interior. As a result of both of these incidents, one of the main characters makes a speech where he basically says that many modern cars are death traps and that manufacturers need to take measures to solve these issues. I think the incident with the Cavalier was just a simple car accident and they saved the person who was in it so not really as negative image for a manufacturer. It might not even be a car made just for this accident. -- Last edit: 2014-11-10 19:40:16 |

It could indeed have been modified for something else; like the case of /vehicle_34237-Toyota-Celica-ST162-1987.html |

5.04 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I think the same car used both times, just patched back together and modified with different front end styling. |
