![]() ![]() Remake of famous BBC series filmed in North Yorkshire for Channel 5 - six episodes and a Xmas special for late 2020. Set in 1937 according to ep 1.01 caption. I was in Grassington during filming 13-16 Oct 2019, so grabbed lots of on-set pictures of cars and stuff. "Village market" set up in the square - stalls, animal pens etc. Definite case of Yorkshire Cliche Bingo for all the flat caps in the crowd, but there were no whippets. Other locations in same area include Arncliffe village (in Littondale valley NW of Grassington - the vets house frontage is in Grassington, but the yard where the Vauxhall and Rover live is Arncliffe), moor top roads between Arncliffe towards Malham, the big posh mansion with butterscotch colour stone is Broughton Hall (on A59 west of Skipton; its grand entrance facade, interior and steading/courtyard are used in different eps). Other filmic oddities - a bookshop in disguise (for IMVegetablePricesdb) - most of the shops were rebranded and given 1930s window displays ![]() - a pillar box which popped up overnight, and then moves around to different positions when no-one's looking. All the yellow parking lines have been sprinkled over with gravel. ![]() - a Kia Ceed in the distance ![]() ...... probably a star's car, or maybe the director's?? ![]() -- Last edit: 2020-09-17 19:44:53 |

Ep 1.02 - impossible-to-capture-properly bike at 06-19![]() ![]() Chuff-chuff ![]() One thing I'm really enjoying about this series - which is otherwise very two-dimensional and predictable - is some stunning photography and compositions - they use the scenery and locations really well and incorporate the vehicles beautifully, so it's a pleasure to watch. |

The production company would not have been aiming to exercise your intellect with this series, but the production values are, as you say, otherwise impeccable. So far, so good, but just one slight whinge, surely the “Mrs. Hall” character is about 100 years too young? |
◊ 2020-10-08 08:22 |
Nice to see they have 'weathered' a lot of the old vehicles instead of having them looking better than new like most period dramas. That old bus looked a bit too shiny though! |

2020 Xmas special added as ep 1.07. I think it was filmed at same time as rest of S1 in autumn 2019 - uses small selection of same cars, with only one obvious newcomer. |

Ep 3.04 - a few new things and some familiar faces Ep 3.05 - a strange one - darker than usual, with a couple of unexpectedly deep storylines exposed. And nothing for vehicles with wheels and tyres. So here's some choo-choos instead at "Keighley" in West Yorkshire, probably the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway preservation line. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Ep 3.06 - S3 finale and war is declared, so a sombre tone. Mostly familiar faces again, and a handful of new ones. Events will mean that any return for S4 will become less of a cosy little fairy tale and change tone into something more serious. |

Xmas 2022 special entered as ep 3.07. Fairly quiet for vehicle sightings, but one thing I don't think we've seen before in background here![]() Only seen briefly, but if IDable it could get a page. Unless we've already got it .... And there's a bit of a horse transporter ![]() - same posh horsey stables as ep 3.03 glimpses of similar above - also unidentifiable, but different bodywork. Otherwise a few familiar faces reappear, but that's it. Ep uses a lot of witchcraft to make us think it's bleak cold midwinter - lots of artificial bleaching to make it look frosty and icy ![]() ... and snow machines ![]() ... note how the roofs are clear of snow. Finale at Keighley & Worth Valley Railway preservation line, again (see ep3.05 comments above) ![]() with a badly seen chuff-chuff ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() which is K&WVR's Glasgow-built 0-6-2T #85 built for Taff Vale Railway in 1899. |

Ep 4.03 - again nothing new, some old friends reappear. Photography still excellent so visually still a treat. But plots are becoming increasingly dominated by soppy Mills & Boon-ish icky stuff. |

Ep 4.04 - only reappearances by the Vauxhall and very briefly the Rover. |
◊ 2023-11-04 01:16 |
Ep 4.05 - a couple of interesting newcomers, and a couple of reappearances. Two odd things - they're very bravely writing out key characters which makes me wonder what they'll be left with for S5 onwards, and James' accent is suddenly becoming very Scottish - OK he's a Scots actor playing a Scottish character, but it's as if someone's pushed all the sliders on his graphic equalizer to the max. |

Ep 4.06 wraps up S4 - only a few old friends, and this glimpse of an olde red PO van![]() with suspiciously modern (70s/80s??) signwriting. |

![]() Xmas 2023 special entered as "ep 4.07", split between usual locations and a new venue with an "RAF" training camp which looked like a real airfield with intact buildings, maybe newer than WW2. Some unintentionally amusing moments as filmed on a very hot summer week but had to look like freezing cold bleak Yorkshire winter, so everything blue-tinged to look more shivery, and lots of sprayed-on frost. And the locals were highly amused when a great big Xmas tree was plonked into Grassington square in the blazing sunshine. Practical issue for us pointy-headed spotters was the blue tinge makes all the cars appear very dark onscreen and difficult to distinguish, but I've sorted as best I can. Broadcast on Channel 5 was preceded by an hour-long "All Creatures Great and Small: Yorkshire Vet Special" which was billed as a behind-the-scenes thing, but very disappointing - too many simpering talking heads gushing about how excited they were to be involved, rather than showing how they did the filming. Some car shots I'd want to capture to complete things, but can't find a source to properly capture from, and while a few things were interesting to try to include, nothing essential missing. Reject - a green canteen truck on the airfield ![]() ![]() Things with wings for impdb (3 yellow, 1 pale blue): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Filming yesterday in Grassington Square (actually it's a triangle) for the Xmas 2024 special (S5.xx). Amazingly for a Yorkshire summer, there was no snow or frost .... but there was a big Xmas tree (not many of those in the shops in June??). Short scene outside the surgery where "Mrs Hall" discovers a poorly thing (little animal/bird) left in a crate on the doorstep by an urchin. Two familiar vans used as passing street furniture:![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Both vans were supplied by a collection in Southport who provide many cars for the series, including the 4 ![]() |

S5 now kicking off - 6 eps set in 1941 and a Xmas special - and rumours S6 has already been commissioned. Much of ep 5.01 set on a WW2 RAF bomber airfield at "Abingdon" (Oxfordshire, also famous for MGs) but I doubt it's really there - looks like same (Yorkshire??) airfield used in ep 4.07 (2023 Xmas special) with a make-over and a different batch of planes - I think it's the Yorkshire Air Museum again. Due to plot, I doubt if the airfield will pop up again in later eps. No, no, no! A poorly researched caption - they really should have thought about this. Abingdon was once the County Town of Berkshire, and remained in the county until the boundary changes in 1974 moved it into Oxfordshire. I grew up south of Abingdon, my primary school lay under the flightpath of RAF Abingdon, which by then was home to the Blackburn Beverleys of Transport Command, and still consider myself a native of North Berkshire........ Incidentally, although this wasn't, the Apple series 'Masters of the Air' /movie_2640044-Masters-of-the-Air.html was shot at the former RAF Abingdon, now Dalton Barracks. |
◊ 2024-10-29 00:34 |
But if they'd said Abingdon, Berkshire they'd probably have been shot down by folk who never realised it switched in 74. It's a no-win situation - would have been better to choose another airfield name ... |
